It's not the design that bothers me, it's so many players every year with a second BC card that says 1st Bowman Chrome! There are SO many other prospects in baseball Topps! Writing this will never solve anything, but it is cathartic.

YOU KNOW
the flag cards are cool BUT......i like the black border on the freeman and not the inner border design, however the color is fine. on the whoever the angels guy is i love the inner border design but hate the color of the inner border and hate the white border around the overall card. man if you could just combine the good features this coulda been a legendary set. oh well, the cards suck

I really like the design, especially since there aren't facsimiles on them.

I think the base design is stronger than the prospect set design overall. They're both pretty basic overall, but not cheap-looking. And that's pretty much the M.O. with the Bowman brand, so it's fine.

On both designs, I like that the names & logos are centered on the card. It lends itself well to the simplicity that is Bowman. Also, the internal white stroke is great, but the lack of a stronger shadow from that stroke into the photo is pretty inexplicable; it would add a ton to the design IMO.

The prospect set is a cleaner design, but has a few needless things working against it. The text block is wasted with the tiny font size. The text block is too dark, you can't even make out the outlines of the foil letters against it in scans. Topps is fully aware scanning is a way to display cards, so ignorance is not an excuse with that. Even though I said I liked the name and logo centering, on the prospect set, the additional centering of the arc on the sides of card makes the overall composition very static. So static that without the inner white stroke, it'd be almost as boring as 2009.

The Veteran/RC has one, simple, design 101 flaw to it. That being the needless, non-decorative notch in the color on the border. I can't think of a reason why it's there, or why they wouldn't just let the line be continuous. Other than that, the prominent team color on the bottom tapering to an accent works very well contrasting against that white stroke.

So my grades (10 scale), keeping in mind that this is a basic brand, and a 7 would be really good: Prospects 5.0, Veterans 5.5.
