Who's going to get it? I read some article and after reading it, it had the pros and cons for each city and I think Chicago has a very slight edge over Rio De Jinero. It seemed like these 2 were the only ones with a legitimate chance to get it according to the article

And to make this on topic: Do you think Baseball will be added to the list of events for 2016? Poll added

Doubtful, pace of place is too slow for the Olympics, the Marathon is finished faster than a baseball game.

I really hope its not Chicago.

Why?

I want it in Chicago for personal reasons, my niece is on the U16 national field hockey team, and the coach is basically grooming her for a specific D1 college full scholarship and this Olympics. A lot can happen between then and now of course but it'd be great to watch my niece in the Olympics!

It is usually not a financial success for the host city, because they have to build stadiums and arenas that end up not being used for much. They are nice and all for the Olympics, but i don't know what Chicago's plans are.

I might disagree here. I can see someplace like Sarejevo or Lake Placid or wherever far off place not being able to re-use the venues, but a major city like Chicago either already has a lot of these built or will be able to re-use the built facilities.

And the local economy will absolutely boom with the Olympics

The economy usually booms in the short run but suffers in the long run. As I said, assuming they don't have to build a ton of venues they will be fine, but do they already have a massive swimming arena, a huge track and field arena?

YES!

Soldier Field! Track and Field!

The Bulls/Blackhawks arena for gymnastics. There are colleges there. Swimming pools I'm sure, and if they are not up too standard, then build one and lease said pool to the schools!

Chicago looks pretty well equipped already IMO

From quick research, the city is going to have to create over a billion dollars in revenue through sponsorships. Use 15 existing venues, and build at least 6 from scratch, including Olympic Stadium and a Swimming Venue. In addition to almost $75 million in funds to get the Olympics to Chicago. It is not just as simple as using Soldier field and college swimming pools. Sure, it does help the cost as opposed to Beijing, but its still a fortune. Olympic Village will be in a $1.1 billion lakefront village.

And Olympic Village will be refitted for condos, hotels, apartments, homes ect...that 1.1 billion can be re-couped through both later sales/rents of the village and the MASSIVE amount of tax revenue made from bars/restaurants/hotels/airports/taxis/tolls ect.....

The city will benefit. Building 6 venues from scratch is nothing. It's a big city, there will be use for all of them after the Oympics leave.

Back OT, Chicago is pretty well equipped to bring baseball back ;)

I say absolutely not. The Prez has bigger things to worry about other than a special trip to Denmark IMO. Will I be happy if we get it? Sure. Will I be happy if we don't get it? Don"t care really.

I'm pulling for Chi-town... :D

Just look at this summertime pic overlooking Lincoln Park, lakefront & downtown...

As for baseball, IMO, it is still a sport that requires athletic skills and should be recognized as such. I think it should be reinstated as it is increasingly becoming a world-wide sport with representation in MLB by many countries.

Maybe the IOC feels the pinch of the cost for "medals" being too great to hand out to baseball teams and their many players.

I disagree. Trust me, I am far from an Obama supporter, but I have no problem with him going to make sure somewhere in the US gets the Olympics. I doubt it has to do with it being in Chicago, I'm sure he would have gone to lobby for wherever in the United States that was in contention.

Anyway, the positive impacts of the Olympics are so great, I have no problem at all with him going over there. Preparing for the games will be a great boost to the economy wherever it is. It will create thousands of jobs as buildings will need to be built, and maybe some roads be constructed. This has far lasting implications beyond just 2016.

Not if it's done right. Look at Barcelona. That city was very similar to the way Detroit is now. When the Olympics went there in 92 it completely revitalized the city and it's still going strong. If the Olympics comes to the USA it should go to Detroit. It will be much easier for Detroit to host an Olympics that Chicago and it could possible turn things around for that city.

Well, if Obama wants to create jobs than 2016 is the time to do it? How about now? Also, that is the only reason Obama went to Denmark was to get away from the public eye and to bring the Olympics to his hometown. I am not saying that he is a miracle man, but he has clearly tried to avoid a lot of topics.
