I was searching ebay for 2016 tier one cards and saw this.. is Topps really using the pens they send players as "hits" now?

Yes, yes they are. I've seen a few of these in the last two days, including Hank Aaron. Still haven't figured out if the nub has been removed or is somehow sealed to prevent future ink problems.

This is a good example of why I've stuck to purchasing on the secondary market for awhile now, I'd be unhappy with getting this as a "hit" in a high end product.

The Lumocolors they use tend to have blue lids, but completely black bodies, if memory serves.

Come to think of it this is something player collector's could possibly like. Definitely not a card for me but for someone who's looking to get everything out there of a certain player I'd think a new 1/1 relic, even if it's just a pen with his signature, would be kind of cool.

It adds 0% of desirability to the cards and actually hurts it IMO. I'd rather have that Hank as just a nice clean auto vs the auto and pen cap.

Yes! The "event" is the player signing! They could almost put "Personal Home Used Event Pen" on it.

How thick are those cards? Tough to see from the pictures, but do they cut the marker in half length-wise to make a thinner?

I agree that's it's a silly relic idea. I'd rather see some obscure relic-type thing that might actually be associated with a game. Maybe game-used Bazooka wrapper? Game-spit sunflower seed shell? :D

I've got pens and markers held by a ton of various athletes when I get stuff signed. Should I contact topps?

Dumber than sending out redemption cards that have zero chance of being redeemed?

That's not dumb. That's them not giving a sh*t about their customers/collectors and the hobby itself. Which I'd argue is worse than making dumb mistakes.

I'd much rather have the card without the marker in it.
