This is one of those days that player collectors live for; this was waiting for me today in the mailbox. It only took me 21 years to harpoon this baby but at long last it has found its home. I am very happy to finally cross it off the checklist.

Some people just don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a hobby.

For example, the '88 Topps Cloth featuring Canseco sells for $200+ each time. I've been collecting Jose since 1990 and there are still many things I'd rather buy with that kind of money.

To the OP, congrats on the wonderful card!

Even if the existence wasn't known until the late 90s, they were still made in 1988. So it would be 21 years (1988-2009) for him to land it.

I'm not sure what the age thing has to do with anything, unless you believe that he isn't older than 25, which I bet most of the board is.

MOFNY: My God, don't do that to me!

matfanofold: I'm not sure when they came out but they say 1988 and I was collecting way before that. I'm 33. I've been collecting Ozzie since I was 8.

WaxHeaven: I only collect Ozzie from his playing days and I have acquired most of those cards already. I'm pretty much down to the really hard to find (really expensive) and that is what i've been concentrating on lately.

magicpapa: I'll leave the water test to the experts.

Kevin: It was on EBay last week.

I'm one of the dinosaurs out there that much prefer old, hard to find items like this to anything that has been produced the last 10 years or so. Ozzie Smith started his career when I was 2 years old and ended it when I was 20. For some reason limiting my collection to the years he played just seems to make sense to me.

Thanks for all the comments.

A lot of people seem to be reading in to my post, and the wrong way. The op said "It only took me 21 years to harpoon this baby..." Implying directly that he has been actively searching for 21 years(hence the title). It just struck me odd. Also, I asked his age because if he was actively searching for a card for 21 years, it seemed that he may be older than I origonally figured him for.

I mean if I wanted a 52 topps Mantle, and finally got one would I say "It took me 57 years to land it??

So, I guess I'm still curious as it now seems that he in fact has not been searching for this card for 21 years, how long have you been searching for it? How long has it been a 'white whale' to you?

Eithor way, still a nice PC card!

I didn't realize what I wrote would be so scrutinized so let me rephrase. This card is reported to be 21 years old; I have been searching for it since I learned of its existence many years ago and I was actively collecting Ozzie Smith cards prior to 1988. Either way I consider it a true white whale and I'm very happy with it.

Congratulations. Truly a remarkable find.

Was your heart racing when the auction was nearing it's end? Maybe I'm weird but it has happened to me in anticipation of winning a card a couple of times. My wife thinks I'm weird.

By the way, what is the water test?

My heart was racing a mile a minute. The water test was something someone did with a common some time ago. I can't remember exactly what the point was but I'm sure someone here will remember.
