This is not one of those I hope he fails kinda posts. I hope the kid does well.

However, I can tell you all kinds of stories about another prospect that was touted as can't miss. Scouts went as far as to say he has "perfect mechanics". His name was Mark Prior.

While this may be true to some extent, I suspect what's happening more is an influx of people who know little or nothing about the hobby who have heard of Stras. To these newbies the amount of cash they're dropping isn't all that much. These whales are what an investor looks for and is their dream come true...because hobby regulars aren't very likely to pay these prices for these cards now given what other cards are worth.

I wonder how many of these people who are willing to pay thousands for his cards have actually seen Strasburg pitch in person or on tv. I wonder what their disappointment level will be when major league hitters make good contact against him. I had the opportunity to watch him throw live once last year vs UC Davis. He was consistently 95-98, but they had no trouble putting the ball in play. Honestly, I think Ubaldo Jimenez has better stuff.

I think it's buyers trying to make a quick buck and are smarter than some think. Whether the price point is accurate or not, it's set. And to those that follow the market, when a big name player is called up, the cost of that card sees at least a 10% gain.

I don't think it matters how well he does, the excitement of his promotion will make even those buyers who paid ridiculous money, more money if they sell at the right time.

I actually think Chrome autos will end up selling for less as the excitement and the promotion to the majors will already be passed. Now, if he throws a complete, 20k shutout, that's a whole diff story.
