As I was clicking through auctions today, I stumbled upon a 04 AFLAC Gold Refractor of Andrew McCutchen. This got me thinking about the whole debacle back in the day about these AFLAC sets, and the numerous posts from board members asking which one they should get [the Gold set or Auto set]. As of right now, if you could go back and choose either the gold set or the auto set, which one would you take and why?

Autos, though I don't regret choosing a Gold set as well.

Interesting results so far...I thought for sure the Gold sets would be more desirable. The Upton Auto had its heyday already, but Maybin and McCutchen's day is coming. And C.J. Henry...well....yeah.

I'd take the Upton alone over the whole gold set. The Maybin is great as well and McCutchen is just an added bonus.

You think they can't? A MLB starter at 21, chances are he hasn't quite peaked yet, either on the field or on ebay.

i really like autographs, a card without an auto is just that- a piece of cardboard. the auto makes it an autographed item. to each his own, but i'd take the maybin/upton over the entire set

I think the hype around him at the time his AFLAC's were going for ~$1500 is what fueled the prices, and I do not think he will have a good enough performance over his big league career to have the auto's reach/sustain that price again.

As an Upton collector, an emphatic vote for the auto set. As an investment, an emphatic vote for the auto set.

I also think that Upton card will never sniff 1500 again.

I like the gold set simply because of the Tillman gold

Did the gold refractor and ref auto sets have the same players?

$1500 is pretty high. Can they get that high again? Yes, but if they do it will be for a very short period of time. Aren't there 100+ of these out there? The only person to get that kind of prices with a card that high #'d for any period of time is Pujols, and Upton has already lost his chance to put up the kind of start to a career Pujols did.

Wow. Some harsh criticism for Upton, who will be all of 21 years old to start the season. Give me a break that he missed his chance to start his career like Pujols and others.

As for the Auto set, it is one of the coolest sets to come out in a while. I have always said that once Maybin and Upton actually fully become faces for their teams in the majors, that set will get right back to where it was during that short hype period. I still have my set in 9.5 form, and I have no plans to sell them soon.

There are 90 of these auto sets, not over 100.
