Order of operations issue. first, divide before add (48/2=24). second, inside parens (9+3=12) before outside parens (12(24)=288)

Others are stating that this would then be factually true:

48 ÷ 2(9+3)
=48 ÷ 2(3+3+3+3)
=48 ÷ (6+6+6+6)
=48 ÷ 6 + 48 ÷ 6 + 48 ÷ 6 + 48 ÷ 6
=8+8+8+8
=32

There is no debate that the answer is 288.. Math is mostly black and white and follows distinct rules.

48÷2(9+3) = 288 (this is the original question)
48/2(9+3) = 2 (this is what may seem to be perceiving the question to indicate which it does not, at least I'd perceive this to show everything that follows as the denominator)

WOW!!! Just WOW!!!!

How do you NOT just do what is in Parens first? How do you skip the first part of PEMDAS?

::facepalm::

The answer is 2....the parens does have to be worked first, therefore it is 48/24....it's that simple....you 288 guys arent reading it right....forty eight divided by two times nine plus three....that is how it is meant to be read.....suck it

Like Billy Martin in the famous Miller Lite "Tastes Great! Less Filling" Tug-of-War commercial where he was on both sides of the rope...

Based on the 2(9+3), I am including the multiplication action as an extension of the parentheses, thus 2.

Or, view it as a fraction:

48
__
2(9+3)

That way, the answer is clearly 2.

The parenthesis are done first. BUT the multiplication goes after the division, and you go left to right. Thus 24x12-288

(2*12) is not the same as 2(12), it is the equivalent of 2*12 and does not take priority over divisions or other multiplications.
