you know what would be a great way to settle this? a poll...

oh.

So if 75% of a class got the wrong answer on the same question, does that then make it the right answer?

this question doesnt have a wrong answer.
This seems to be the case, as odd as that sounds.

I can accept the fact that people can see it either way, but some of the arguments here are laughable (I won't call out specific ones).

send the question to steven hawking, and let his answer be law.
not the could be this could be that, the real answer.

in no way does that end the argument.

perfectly legitimate mathematical theories to support both arguments.

If 75% of a class got an answer wrong, a good professor would throw that question out of the exam.

Dividing by two is the same as multiplying by 1/2, so I would think it is:

48 x 1/2 x (9+3)
48 X .5 X 12
= 288

I change my answer!

It's 2.

(48÷2)(9+3)=288
48÷2(9+3)=2

I GOT IT NOW!
There we go!

Everyone who gets 288 is putting invisible parenthesis around the 48 and the two

You are just dividing 48 by 2(9+3)

If you change everything to multiplication, there are no parentheses, and I still get 288.

48 x 1/2 x (9+3)
48 x .5 x 12
=288
