How often do these guys do well in the majors? It seems like it is always brought up how a prospect has 5 tools but who has been a 5 tool prospect and had sucess?

Why not?
Hes hit 30hr,stole 30 bases,hit 300.,has a gold glove.

To be a 5-tool player, you need to have speed.

David has no speed, just smart base running.

Thus, David Wright was never a five tool prospect.

Upton- Lets wait and see, he is having a break out year though.
Wright- Again 4 tools but I could see him being considered to have speed when he was a prospect.
Kemp- Ok
Hamilton- Is helped by his ballpark.
Beltran- Career average of .283 but if he was considered a 5 tool prospect I'll let it go.
A-Rod- Juiced
Griffey- Ok

Wright isn't a burner, but the speed is slightly above average. Its probably like 55 speed, but I think someone could ask a scout and they would tell you all the tools are average or better on Wright.

Cliff Floyd & Ruben Rivera come to mind. Around Chicagoland, CFlo was the next big thing. We all know how that worked out.

Ricky Henderson. The ultimate five tool player. Barry Bonds was too at one time. Hanley is a good example of one today.

However, the evolution of a five tool player always finds them to end up focusing on one avenue or another in order to be successful.

When a player is a pure athlete at 18 or 19 years old and gets hit with the "five tool" target, it hardly ever stays. You either see those players develop into power hitters and bulk up to fit the role or you see them develop into contact hitters that slap the ball around the park for very little power.

With how a player is "slotted", it impacts the way they train for their position. If you are designated as a future clean up hitter you had better be able to drive the ball. Just like Justin Upton. He has plus speed right now but as he develops more into a power hitter, you'll see his body develop into a slugger's body and it will come at the expense of his speed. That is natural.

Meanwhile, his brother is a projected lead off kind of hitter. He'll work more on explosiveness and contact and will likely retain his speed and never hit for power.

Players that can "do it all", eventually end up doing just a few things better than others, and that is what scouts and management asks them to emphasize.

Too early to tell, but it certainly looks like Andrew McCutchen and Dexter Fowler will be there in a couple of years.
