So here's the deal: I've thinned out a TON of my collection at the LCS lately, and I'm sitting on about $500 store credit. SP Authentic is releasing soon, and I would love to buy a case of that. However, with the $500, I could also probably pick up a couple of cornerstone cards for my collection too. That being said, three of my biggest cards I want to add are a Kirby Puckett auto, Adrian Peterson auto, and a Joe Mauer Bowman Chrome rookie auto - and those are three of the most unlikely cards to ever show up at the shop.

From SP Authentic, I plan on picking up the Harvin and Greene patch/autos, and wouldn't mind getting a couple of those Steelers legacy cards either. I figure with a case I have a fairly good shot at getting something I'm happy with, but at the same time, the store credit could go a long way in reeling something I'd like.

What are your thoughts on the matter? It would be hard to resist the rush when SPA releases, but I've heard rumors that 40% of the set is going to be redemptions too. So, I turn to your feedback.

Buy the stuff you want and dont take the risk. You KNOW you will be happy with your cornerstone purchases.

The Mauer chromes are getting harder to pick up because of the price, so be very careful in buying one. If you want a Peterson auto, its going to cost you at least 125, and a Puckett is around the same for a certified card auto. If I were you, I would go Peterson and Mauer, and then a few boxes of SPA to make sure you get that itch to bust taken care of.

I'd actually go with the Puckett and the Mauer. You dont have a preference of an AP and he has loads of autos out there. Puckett has only a few really nice looking autos. I like the Greats of the Game auto...98 maybe. The gold colored cards.

Maybe Mauer, Puckett and a couple of SP Boxes that might net you an AP auto.

Avoid the itch to open wax bro. It turns into a rash when it's all said and done. You'll just end up dissapointed and red all over.

Grab those singles!

And hold off on the AP auto for now. RB's typically do not have lengthy careers and their stuff always drops in price. If you can wait 6 years or so you will save 50% or more. Look at a guy like Tomlinson. His stuff has already started to dwindle again. Peterson is still close to the peak he's already reached.

I am a fan of consolidation and picking up cards. Sure you could get a hit from a box but you could also get burned. Make sure you get what you want to have in your collection then burn the rest on packs.

The AP autos I've seen are all pretty crappy ones, like Gridiron Gear or TTT. I want something a little nicer. As far as the Mauer, I think they darn near sold out of all their Mauer stuff at Twinsfest, although I couldn't say for 100% sure.

Personally, I'd go with the singles you want instead of the case. I'd recommend picking up a Puckett you really like, picking up a copy of the Mauer, then (if you have enough left over) go for a Peterson. Kirby's stuff is most likely to increase/retain it's value over time IMO (I've noticed his stuff getting more expensive even in the last year).

Which ever way you go, best of luck. :)

Singles.

Wait on the AP. Get your Mauer / Puck first.

You'll bust wax and you'll get a Tyson Jackson Auto / Patch and a Jarett Dillard / Mike Thomas dual auto and you will ask yourself, "Why ... ::facepalm:: "

Buy the case of SPA, and trade boxes for the cards you want here. That way you may have a box or 2 left over that you can bust.

I didn't realize Three Stars bought cards. That's interesting. I say you use the store credit to get some boxes of SPA or a case and let me know when you do so I can be there to watch. :D

I like the excitment of busting wax, but SPA is going to be a HUGE chance this year. Redemption cards will kill the values
of the single cards, and who wants to wait until next year to get the cards (when no one will care about these players).
If you are going to go that route wait and see who are redemptions.

I would wait on Mauer, he only has one way to go and that is down. If he tanks at the beginning of the season then you
can save some money, even if he continues his ways, there will be other cards that people will be chasing. AP has signed
a ton of cards, so his cards should be going down after an "off" season.

While I agree with you to an extent, I live in St Paul, and my store credit is at a St Paul card shop, which means that Mauer and AP will carry a premium here for a long time, even if they have off-years.

I do appreciate everyone's feedback - I stopped in yesterday, and told the owner that I'll start off with a couple of boxes and hold the rest of the store credit for now. There's also a card show this weekend that I'm going to head to in hopes of tracking down that Mauer BowChro.
