Jhoulys Chacin.

It may not be too pretty, but he is getting the job done: 3.23 ERA, 28/13 SO/BB, .219 BAA, 2.07 GO/AO in AA Texas League at the age of 21..Most impressive. I will be the first to admit that his tools aren't flashy, but they sure are effective, and his maturity on the mound is another plus.Where do you think he ends the year? AAA? The Majors? I could see him filling a whole in the Rockies rotation sometime in September, but the Rockies have bee hesitant to push their pitching prospects.

Disclaimer: I am invested in Chacin fairly heavily (I would guess in the $300 region), but I really don't have any intention of selling the stuff I currently have.

I think he has a good chance of doing well being a sinkerball/strikeout guy in Colorado, pretty tough to be a gas thrower or a guy who gets a 1/1 GO/FO ratio either.

I don't think the Rockies will have the need to call him up.
A. Their starting pitching is not that bad. There relievers are struggling this year.
Cook
Jimenez
De La Rosa
Marquis
Hammel
B. They probably won't be in playoff contention

Which is why they WILL bring up some of their more advanced prospects to see what they have, or at least that's what I think they will do. This year is clearly not a playoff year for the Rockies, you might as well check and see what the future looks like.

From a prospector... I'd like him to stick in the minors all year and put some nice numbers and have a good spring training next year. Maybe even win a spot in the rotation during '10 spring training. If he comes up on a losing team and puts up average numbers it will really hurt his prices.

From a prospecting perspective, that is absolutley what a Chacin investor would look for. I am looking at Chacin as a long term buy, and would love to see him in the majors at some point in 2009 just to see how much more seasoning he will need to reach his potential (2nd starter on a good team).
