Someone called me today and because they heard I sell baseball cards. While this isn't completely accurate, I went over to his house and looked through his stuff. He mostly has vintage (primarily late 60's and early 70's) and I told him I'd take the binder of nicer cards to see if I found anything particularly valuable.
Looking through the stuff he has lots of pretty big names and decent cards (couple of 1971 Clemente, half dozen Steve Garvey RC cards, RC cards of Winfield, Ozzie Smith, Brett etc.) but while most are in ok shape, there's nothing that I could find that really warrants getting graded.
At this point I'm trying to figure out what the best advice I can give him is. It seems to fit that window where it is clearly not worth nothing, but it's not quite worth enough that a consignor would give it much attention. There are hundreds of cards from the end of the 60's and early 70's (as well as some from the rest of the 70's) including some pretty nice names, but I can't see anyone really piecing through it.
I guess the question I'm trying to solve is how to balance the amount of effort while still trying to get some money out of them. He wants to take the money and help his parents out (who apparently could use some financial help) and while I went in letting him know there was a chance the stuff is not worth anything, I do think there is value to be gotten here.
Any thoughts are appreciated!
