Got the new Beckett Hockey today and it was the annual "Goalie Issue" and this got me thinking, once Martin Brodeur retires who takes over for him as the most popular/collected goalie in the hobby?

I wanna be a homer and say Marc Andre Fleury ;) , but is it? Maybe its Roberto Luongo, who has some really hardcore collectors in British Columbia and Montreal? Ryan Miller maybe? Somebody else? Carey Price would have been the obvious choice a couple years ago, but his stock has fallen way down since then. Kipper was also very popular a few years ago, but has since slipped a bit in the Hobby as well.

So who do you got? and if you were to pull a current goalies (other than Brodeur of course) autograph in a pack of cards and you could only trade/sell it who would you want it to be?

I would say it would be Ryan Miller, but being in Buffalo which is not really that big of a market im going to have to go with someone like Marc Andre Fleury. This doesnt say he is the best, but for someone reason it appears to me that Pittsburg is the most collected team period. Roberto Luongo could be the most collected but him and Miller still have not won a cup yet and Fleury has.

Good post and you are right, whoever is the "hottest" or very popular in the Hobby, does not necessarily mean they are the very best on the ice.

Another name that just came to my mind is Henrik Lundqvist. I know he has a ton of collectors and plays in New York with an original 6 team. Not only that, but he also has a bunch of collectors and a very strong following back in his home country of Sweden.

Maybe it is Henrik Lundqvist?

Well the only goalie left after brodeur who has won multiple cups and probably should be considered the most collectable is Chris Osgood, but he doesnt even start anymore. I would definately agree with King Henrik, but they to come around and be even more competitive. I dont think Jimmy Howard being in Detroit is anywhere close to being the most collect, but Dipietro might finally on his way back also being a New York team and they have tons of young talent around him.

Becketts list of all time most collected goalies is (in order)

1. Patrick Roy- big surprise
2. Martin Brodeur
3. Dominik Hasek
4. Ken Dryden
5. Terry Sawchuk

Then Beckett lists the most collected/hottest current goalies (from the last year) in no particular order...

Evgeni Nabokov
Marc Andre Fleury
Jimmy Howard
Henrik Lundqvist
Jaroslav Halak
Antti Niemi
Robert Luongo

I would say it's Henrik Lundqvist. he has a ton of collectors in the US, Canada and Sweden. if he and the Rangers can win a Cup I think he could become as big as Roy and Brodeur.

I think Fleury, Luongo and Miller are all top level goalies and could also become as popular if they can continue to have great careers. if Fleury and the Pens add another Cup or 2 he will also jump to the same level as Roy and Brodeur in terms of popularity.

Its odd that Osgood, with the amount of success he had on an Original six team never got really popular in the Hobby. Kinda surprises me actually.

I have said this many times and will continue to say it Osgood was never that good and was a product of Detroit's amazing defensive system.

If Toronto and Montreal both get good at the same time, Halak and Gustavsson will be hot commodities.

I should have said WHEN Fleury and the Pens add another Cup or 2 he will also jump to the same level as Roy and Brodeur in terms of popularity.

I agree with both of those choices Stu. there are definitely some hardcore Habs and Leafs collectors out there.

also I think if Carey Price regains the starting job in Montreal or is moved and can start playing up to his and others expectations he will jump back up to the top of the popularity list.

I understand you think they have a great defensive system (which they do), but he did good for Detroit down the stretch and still has a couple of rings to his name. Im with G-Money in that im surprised he never got really big hobby wise. Would you say Hasek as well was a product of the system? He didnt win a cup until he came to Detroit. Regardless, a goalie cannot win a game he can only lose them.

I would say Osgood was an average goalie and again only won the Cup because of the team he was on. take him off the Red Wings and how many games or Cups do you think he would have won?

as for Hasek he was great with Buffalo, he was great with Detroit and he was great in International play. he proved that by taking the Sabres to the Playoffs year after year and to a Cup Final. he was a part of the the defensive force that the Red Wings were and still are.

Osgood is basically Derek Fisher or Robert Horry. He's a good but not great player that has been clutch in the playoffs a couple times.

Well who does everyone think is the best young goaltender? As in a goalie who has been drafted in the past two or three years.

I am not sure about the past 2 or 3 years but out of the last 5 years I would say Halak has proven to be the best young goalie out of that bunch.

Well if you asked this question a year ago id probably say Steve Mason, but he really had an off year this season. I think the LA Kings are very deep with great young goalies. Jonathon Quick, Jonathan Bernier and soon to be Martin Jones. Ill have to say Quick is my choice for best young goalie at this moment (For goalies who were rookies last year and this year)
