the yankees failed to sign their 2008 1st and 2nd rounders this year, so they'll get those picks back next year, while losing their 2009 to these two signings.

SO, in reality, they'll still have a 1st and 2nd round pick in 09, but they could have had 4.

BA's last update has the Yankees getting a 3rd rounder for not signing their 2nd round pick.

Im not thrilled with this signing at all. As a Yankees fan, I would have much rather given a 2 year deal to sign Sheets as I think he is the better pitcher. I know Burnett is good when he is on, but often is he really on?

Burnett is a very good pitcher. He is generally very good when he's on the mound. People can knock him for his injury history, but he was strong this year, and it isn't like he's missed a ton of time the past few years. I'm happy people are back to bashing the Yankees. It's good for baseball.

Oh, and no one said they're done. Sheets is likely still very much on their radar.

um...what?

He pitched 165 innings two years ago and 135 innings the year before that. Even last year, in his "breakout" year, he had an ERA over 4!

Burnett arguably has the best stuff in the game for a starter, certainly top 10. Health is his problem.

I can't rank Burnett as one of the top pitchers because if you can't get that ERA under 4 you don't deserve to be.

So the Yankees have signed two Type-A free agents, already losing their 1st rounder in the Sabathia deal, so what do the Jays get besides a Supplemental 1st Round pick?

To be honest with you, Baseball 1st rounders don't pan out 49.9% of the time. Football and Basketball are the best Drafts. Other than that a first round choice in 09 for Sabathia is well worth it.

This is the reason the Yankees are in the position they are in right now of having to attempt to buy championships, which doesn't work. **** is the only homegrown talent they have produced in the last 10 years that they haven't traded away for a high priced player. Look at the homegrown talent the good teams today like the Phils, Rays, Red Sox, Mets (among others) have produced even in the last 5-8 years that are the key to their success today. In today's game, buying championships doesn't work and that's why the Yankees are destined for 3rd place again next year.

Well I wish that the Yankees could have the success with Hughes and Kennedy that the Sox had with Lester. Some times things don't pan out, but the Yankees tried to incorporate both players in last year. Kennedy blew wind and Hughes was on the DL the whole year. Can't help it. So obviously they needed help and got two great pitchers. The Mets did the exact same thing in getting Santana, K-Rod, and Putz. The Red Sox did the same thing in trading for Beckett and signing Daisuke. All teams were in dire need of pitching and got it.

This is why I hate the F**#*!@ Yankees!

And there fans carry themselves around like they are king S&$! and they wonder why they win??? Because you are morons they pay too much for the players..... and outspendmost teams by 100+ Million.

No one should give Cashman any respect..... he has the easiest time as any GM in baseball, he overspends and then they win..... And we call him a genious?

He is a moron that was given a gift job...... Anywhere else in the league he would drag a team into the ground, without those $$$$$$.

I HATE Burnett now!!!! From what I heard he has had similar offers but he chooses to sign with the biggest rival of my hometown team, He has a sour attitude and a move to NY will make him worse.

Heck with baseball and the MLB, I have almost given up hope with the MLB..... They are not even giving anyone a chance and heck even pressureing the players to sign in NYC.

I root for the underdog in the playoffs, but with them signing every FA in the world...... the underdog will not even have a chance.

I am seriously feeling sick to the stomach, and I did not even want my jays to resign a.j.

Heck with this!.

Shep :ugeek:

At least you can sell hockey cards up there.

Yeah..... that's true.

A Sport that actually makes all team's competitive and have a chance at winning, The Yankees are ruining this game.

the yankees are not the only ones doing this though. lets be fair here and start bashing the mets, red sox, etc.

exactly i love how people bash the yankees but forget about all the other team's with huge payrolls who reel in players

They spent $70,000,000 MORE than any other team. There were 11 teams last season that spent less than that for their ENTIRE team.

To be quite honest, not making the playoffs with that payroll is one of the most pathetic chokes to ever occur in MLB. If they weren't idiots that overspent on the likes of Pavano and ARod, they could have an amazing roster. For what they are paying Arod, they could have had like Vlad and Miguel Cabrera. I don't think anyone in their right mind would take Arod over both Vlad AND Cabrera.

I just hope that the Yankees going after Texeria next thing is just a rumor, b/c that seriously would be ridiculous. If they spend half a billion dollars this off-season - I'm not even looking forward to next season.

Though as someone else said, if this blows up in their face, it'll make it that much sweeter. And in response to another post, i would not criticize the Red Sox of the same thing. I realize i may be biased, but while they have a larger payroll than most to operate with - you rarely see Theo just throwing money around, other than the Dice-K signing (a large portion the ridiculous negotiation fee) there's only been one or two free agents even given over $50 million, most of the free agents have been second - third tier type guys that they feel fit the team and have upside for their cost - which it looks like their doing again this year to fill a rotation spot instead of giving in to Burnett, and possibly Lowe with salaries that probaly don't warrant their productivity.

Exactly, I don't think they are even in the same boat. The only FA's I can really remember the Red Sox throwing money at were Drew and Matsuzaka. Drew's salary is higher than he deserves (don't get me wrong, he is solid and basically carried the BoSox for a while this season), but I think Dice-K is still a solid price for this productivity. The Red Sox have mad solid FA moves (i.e. David Ortiz and kind of in a sense Becket... though he was through a trade). Go for cheaper players that have a big upside. Once it's proven they will produce, sign them to large contract. To me, that is a smart move by Theo and not buying players.

Sucks!

Nothing against either Burnett or CC, as I would taken either of them in Orange and Black in a heartbeat, but I hope they BOTH get dead arms now!! ;)

Not even close to being the best....even when completely healthy.

He most certainly does. I guess you must have pedestrian stuff to be 8th among active players in k/9 for his career. He's one of the hardest throwers and has some of the best breaking balls around when healthy.

After 10 seasons in the league, having "great stuff" doesn't mean anything anymore. He's 31 year old and has an established track record of sub 12 win seasons, injuries, and .500 winning percentages. Don't expect any improvement from that now that he's on the other side of 30.

Exactly. I was hoping beyond anything that the Sox weren't really interested in the JD Drew of pitchers.
He sucked it up for one year, where he knew he could opt out at the end of it. Now that he's paid, I don't see it happening again. He'll be above his average because he's on a better team than the last couple of years, but he won't break 15 wins, and his ERA won't be under 4.50. Sadly, that's still worth 80 million in today's market.

Really? So you would take him over
Lincecum
Webb
Halladay
Santana
Haren
Oswalt
Sabathia
Peavy

and to be honest, that is just a small list. Listen, I was high on Burnett back in the day when most people gave up on him. However, I think it is stupid to say he has some of the best stuff after one good season. For the most part, the guy has been injury ridden and mediocre.

Is he seriously going to try and put AJ Burnett and Ben Sheets in the same rotation?

One of the worst ideas I've ever heard. I love Sheets and he's a bargain, but how can you rely on these guys to pitch 40% of your games?

Sabathia is ahead of Burnett in the Elias rankings. Thus, the Jays get the Yankees 2nd rounder plus a Supp 1st. If the Yanks sign Teixeira as well, as he's the other guy ahead of Burnett, the Jays would get the Yanks 3rd rounder instead of the 2nd.

I had hoped that the Yanks compensation picks for not signing their 1st last year would be up for grabs, but apparently not.

I liked Burnett and he's definitely one of the best when healthy but, to be perfectly honest, I was kinda relieved he was leaving. Having him on the team was frustrating simply because you never knew when he'd be available. Now, for the Yankees that won't be an issue since they can spend their way to health but whatever.

Man, how quickly the best rotation in baseball falls apart:

Halladay- Thank God he's still around
Burnett- Yankees
Marcum- TJ Surgery
McGowan- Shoulder surgery
Litsch- Now the #2

What the Yankees are doing is nothing like any other team.

Throwing an extra 40 mil at CC just to come to NY, and giving 17 Mil a year to a 3 starter like Burnett. It is ridiculous.
