I've seen many threads on what scanner works good and which does not. My scanner has gone brain dead and my old HP Photosmart has no drivers for Win 7. I'm researching the all-in-one photo printing/scanners so I can free up some desk space in my hobby room. Does anyone here have one of these combination printer/scanners? I'm assuming photo and scan quality are not as good as a device that specializes in one or the other. Primary purpose is printing photos to keep the wife happy and obviously for me to scan my cards. Any advice as far as what is good or bad is most appreciated.

Thanks
Tom

Tom, I am in the same boat as you but I only need a scanner. My new Win 7 laptop does not work with my old scanner (and I have been unable to trouble shoot any driver to work). Good luck and hope all is well.

My wife just bought me this one for Christmas.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Canon-Pixma-MG5220-All-in-One-Printer/15042568

I love it! Wireless scanning and printing, the scans are sharp, pictures print as good as a taking them to be printed and the photo program that comes with it is awesome. If you place a card to be scanned on the bed crooked, it straightens it out, crops the image and will color/light correct it if you want. I scanned all the cards at once, it cropped and saved each card individually.

Check out my post in this thread which I used my new scanner.

For the price, I am thrilled with it.

For all-in-ones, I'm not sure what to tell you. No matter how good of one you get, it won't scan slabs.

If you need just a scanner(scott), the HP G3110 is the best bang for the buck CCD element scanner out there.

Tedw9 - Thanks for the information. The Canon Pixma 980,990 and 8120 have all received the PC Magazine Editors choice awards. I like the idea of getting the cards cropped and saved to individual files automatically. That would save me a TON of time when listing high quantities of lower end cards. My current scanner was a cheapo Canon scanner. I think the scanner on these multi function devices is better than what I have today. PC Mag raves about the photo quality so I think I'm leaning towards the MP990 for about $125 or the MG8120 for $220. I'm reading up on the tech specs to see what you get for the extra money. I read that both printers will scan and print from old negatives. That could be a lot of fun. I have a few old negatives that I've salvaged from family storage over the years.

Oh yeah... You've been thanked :-)

I have a different member of the Canon Pixma "family", the MX870, that I'm very happy with and would easily recommend, as well. I'm very happy with it's scanning capabilities as well as copying and printing. I've had it for at least 6 months, with no problems.

I have a 6 year old Lexmark X1150 PrinTrio. Prints and copies great. Don't do much picture printing though. And as stated above, doesn't scan slabs anywhere near some of these newer CCD scanners.

I'm still amazed at how well it is going after all this time though. I've thought about getting a new scanner, but I'm probably just gonna wait til this one dies.

Every card on my site is scanned in a one-touch, and the 2005 Bowman Chromes in BGS cases, if you wanna see some examples:

Not trying to be a dick in any way, but those would look 100% better if scanned with a CCD.

For what you spend on your awesome collection, it's worth the $50 bucks.

I paid $100 for mine, and still feel it was worth it.

No offense taken.

I actually have a slightly older CCD flatbed scanner without a power cord. And I have an auction for the cord in my watch list. I just haven't bought it yet. Every time I go to buy it, I end up buying more cards. ::facepalm::

I looked at it again today as I was spending twice that amount on some singles. I'm actually curious as to the difference between the two. I'll pick it up soon enough!

As long as it's a CCD, there should be little difference. If the cord is cheaper than a new G3110, just get the cord. :)

I hate trying to buy not knowing what the scans will look like. I just went through the process. i have a Canon Pixma mp990 and it works great for scanning regular cards. Prints photos beautifully. Still haven't scanned a ton of slabs but I have done a few PSA and they look very sharp. It has a ccd scanner. I love the wireless setup too. I got a good price online but I think the price has come down a bit.
Some examples: (some of these are probably cropped additionally manually, the gold spotlight is not. The only problem I've had is scanning white cards. The scanner background is white- so with autocrop it crops out the border of the card much too tightly. If you put a dark background behind the cards, it scans the entire thing and does not autocrop each card. So for now I scanned the white cards one at a time and then cropped them myself. So for the TOTT at the bottom that's what I had to do.
Good luck!

I am in the same boat. I have an old Epson that scans ok and two ancient printers that need to be replaced and I've been researching all-in-ones. The Canon's you listed were the ones I found that had CCD. I too am debating between the MP990 and MG8120.
