Alcantara could be good, but he's got a long way to go. Head doesn't look like anything special. Pumped to have Bailey, and Ryan Sweeney has a decent OBP for a bottom of the lineup bat.

Alcantara was boston's 25th prospect, Bailey's elbow must be hanging by the threads to be sold for this low either than or Beane has went anti moneyball with Reddick

I'm almost positive Jim Callis would have ranked Head above Alcantara on this year's Sox top 30.

I'm referring to soxprospects, not Callis...

Have no issue with this whatsoever. Give up a guy who was compeltely lost at the plate for the 2nd half of his season and two guys 4+ years away from contributing. Pick up a player who will likely be your closer and is under control through arbitration for 3 years.

A+ to Cherington on this one

Its going to be interesting to see what Matt Garza brings in a trade. It should be along the lines of Haren to Diamondbacks.

Great deal for the Red Sox. Ryan Sweeney doesn't have much power but he has a great OBP and is a solid defender. Good luck Ryan and Andrew!

Sweeney is gonna be the 4th outfielder.

I like this trade a lot, especially with the inclusion of Sweeney (I'm psyched I held onto his 2005 Super and Red Refractors now, as I think he could do quite well in Boston).

A surprise to see this thread. (first I've heard of this)
An even better surprise that it's a deal that made me say "Really? That's all it took?"

I love the trade. My realistic expectation for Reddick was that he would be a 4th/OF type. That makes it a very low-risk deal in my eyes. I only hope Bailey proves to have the mental makeup to succeed in Boston (which is always a legitimate concern to me, you never know how guys will react to markets like Bos, NY, Phi until they are thrown in the fire).

Nice trade for the Red Sox. Bailey is a solid closer and they got him pretty cheap. I suppose the big question is how he will fare under the spotlight of having to close out games in the AL East with a contending team in a very tough media market. Of course, this would be a concern with anyone they signed.

It looks like Oakland is loading up on prospects!

Yeah, and then when those prospects start to get decent... trade them for more prospects!

Ugh.

I still have not heard one person who can explain to me the urgency of trading all these guys NOW.

Heck, even my Dad, who's followed them since the 40s, is getting fed up and talking of packing it in... :?

Great deal for Boston. The A's really have given up and are looking forward to that new stadium in the 3-5 year future it seems.

And seems the Bard thing is not just prep work after all...

So the A's trade an above average closer, under team control for 3 years(according to a previous poster), and get an average Joe OF in Reddick, and then Alcantara and Miles Head?

I feel like I'm drunk right now, because I cannot for the life of me understand what the A's were thinking here. This is highway robbery by the Red Sox. What a move for them.

I love the deal, couldn't be happier. In reading Bailey's thoughts on the trade I think he'll do just fine in Boston. Time will tell but I sure hope so.

I see it as a steal for the Red Sox, but also Oakland knows Andrew Bailey best and I would think there is a reason they took what they were given.

I can't see a downside to this trade at all. Doubt there's a GM out there that wouldn't give up a 19 year old pitcher for the chance to land an All Star caliber closer. He's a few years away, at best, and that's assuming he doesn't flame out or need a few TJ surgeries. Head plays first, so he's a man without a position in Boston. The only problem I see is potentially having to start an Andrew Bailey collection from scratch!

Not much of a haul for Oakland.

That said, Bailey's big concern is his health. It wouldn't be all that surprising to see him go down again.

Nice deal all around here. Boston got the closer w/ accolades they feel they needed and Oakland got some nice usable pieces. Reddick is an upgrade from 2011 DeJesus and Head has some potential with the bat. Not a bad pickup for a relief pitcher heading towards arbitration raises. Closers are over-valued; live arms in the back end of a bullpen are pretty replaceable. Oakland could pick up a guy like Ryan Madson on the cheap as a stop-gap until they uncover the next Andrew Bailey in their system.

This is EPIC for Boston and :benson:  for Oakland!! I think both players will do well and could see be interesting how much playing time he gets there. And I also hope his numbers get a big boost!
