Don't they have ALOT of money tied up in BIG contracts that expire over the next coupla years?

and I for one, am hoping they over-take Texas to set up a Tiggers-Halos playoff series. That would be fun, and probably pretty heated. :?

Already at $80M for 2012 before Weaver. The only real contract after 2012 is Wells, but thats another $24M in 2013 and 2014.

Nope, not really. Hunter and Abreu expire next year at $18.5 and $9m, respectively. Haren and Santana are reasonable at under $12m per for next year, $13.5 I believe for Haren in 2013. Wells is the only crazy contract at $20m per for 2012-2014. For this offseason, the Angels have Kazmir ($12.5), Matthews Jr ($11), Rodney ($5.5), Pineiro ($8), and hopefully Mathis ($2) and Abreu ($9) get moved to come to $58m coming off the books.

Although the Weaver signing is very wise and looks the Angels haven't done a good job in recent history.

The Vernon Wells trade might go down as one of the worst all time (I know thats saying a lot, but come on they picked up 85 million dollars and Vernon Wells might finish with one of the worst seasons ever. Also they gave up Mike Napoli who has 20 home runs from the catcher position, where the Angels have been really hurting this year. And he is doing it for their rival. Also Abreu's vesting option is going to kill them.

There is nothing the could do about Kendrys Morales which has been a huge blow, but Mark Trumbo has stepped in nicely. It would be cool to watch those two in the middle of the line up next year if Morales can ever get healthy.

Napoli was causing problems in the clubhouse. He had to go. People continuously fail to make note that the Angels didn't assume the entire Wells contract. The Jays added $5m cash and took Rivera and Napoli's salaries, which came out to about $11m. Wells at 4 years for ~$75m isn't terrible if he would actually play to his career averages.

Yeah, those are the BIG contracts I was referring to. Although I didn't know Abreu had an option. Saving that $$$ makes the Weaver contract even look better IMO and lets them make some moves in the off-season, which the Rangers probably can't do. And my A's and the M's definitely can't do. :(

and besides IF Morales never returns, that money probably doesn't come out of their pocket.

And yeah, one bad move, like taking Wells' contract off Toronto and him disappointing like this, can really screw up a team's finances for years. See Chavez, Eric, A's. :(

Definitely. Don't know contract details, but it sounds like his salary won't be more than $14m for next season. With almost $58 off the books, after arb raises to Kendrick/Aybar/Callaspo and Weaver's $6m raise, the Angels should have $35 or so to spend on shoring up the offense (Pujols, maybe?), a mid level SP, and signing a reliable bullpen arm. The Angels owner has said many many times that he understands the value of a superstar type player and would spend what is necessary for one, so as an Angels fan I am hoping he makes a move for either Pujols or Fielder. Especially w/ Hunter's $18.5 off after 2011, it makes sense.

Watching that overpriced Vernon Wells is tough every time we go to the games. Hunter has been good in august but he looks towards the end too.
