Any chance Harper gets #1 on BA's top prospect list?

teheran doesn't even come close to sniffing my top 5....

Trout
Harper
Moustakas
Aroldis Chapman
Montero

I am not a real big Montero fan, but 8 million prospectors can't be wrong, right?

Someone a Fernando martinez collector is crying

Montero is my #1 - for this reason. If Harper or Trout reaches AAA by age 20 and tears it up, most people would be pretty pleased and say he's well on his way. Montero has already done that.

I also think Chapman should be the top pitching prospect, ahead of Teheran.

I can see how you got to that decision, but remember that both Trout and Harper offer much more in terms of overall tool-sets. They can both change a game with their abilities much better than Montero.

Montero has two tools working for him as an elite prospect - Power & Bat. The bat is better than most, so it's considered a plus tool, but his power is the calling.

Trout has speed, bat, power, and defense.

Harper has Power, bat, arm, and defense (as RF).

My top 10 are as follows....

1. Bryce Harper
2. Mike Trout
3. Aroldis Chapman
4. Jesus Montero
5. Eric Hosmer
6. Dustin Ackley
7. Julio Teheran
8. Manny Machado
9. Dominic Brown
10. Mike Moustakas

I'm sure I'm in the minority on this but I don't think Trout will hit for more than average power. I also don't think he'll hit for the same level of average that Montero will. Between the three I think Montero has the best bat tool, and is a coin flip for power with Harper. Trout is no slouch obviously, but in this company I'd have him 3rd.

The package of an 80 Speed, with AVG power, Above Avg Bat and Gold glove defense beats....

Montero @ Above Avg Bat (70), Above Avg Power (70), Lack of position on defense

But it doesn't beat...

Harper @ tremendous arm for RF (80), Raw Power (80), Avg bat, Avg speed, Avg defense (RF)

Harper's package of tools and his extremely successful pro debut in the AFL, especially on 2-days a week playing time, make him the best prospect in the minors.

If I were to grade them out I'd put Trout's bat at a 50 or 60 - same with Harper. I think Montero's in the 70-80 range. If there's any power difference in Harper and Montero it's negligible.

The positional argument is the only thing that puts Trout in this discussion for me. Montero has a tremendous 70-80 arm as well, if he's even an average catcher I'll argue that it negates any positional value that Trout or Harper has over him.

Remember at this time last year people were concerned that Posey's catching abilities weren't up to ***** - he also was known for a good arm but questionable receiving skills. Montero is bigger but I could see him becoming average. Even as a DH or 1B I think the bat is a Cabrera-esque value - and he'll be the most valuable offensive player of the bunch.

Of course we're picking nits, and I'd be happy to have any of them. Maybe I'll do a blog post offering comps for my top ten.

It'll be either Harper or Trout. Personally I'd give it to Trout, but BA places more emphasis on potential than performance.

I say Harper takes it.

EDIT - As for a top 5, Teheran and Hellickson belong there.

Here's mine:

1) Trout
2) Harper
3) Montero
4) Hellickson
5) Teheran

I say hellickson takes top 3 and chapman will be top 5
