Go tell this to my best friend of mine, that just lost a kidney and got a donated one....And now he has lost the sight in his left eye do to having diabetes. And will be unable to drive a truck soon, he he will most likely have to change his job status.

It is for employers under ADA. It's usually not necessary to provide a reasonable accommodation since the people usually can manage their insulin. However, under some circumstance it may be necessary to make an accommodation, therefore it can be a disability.

I guess I'm sensitive to this issue because I have a nine-year old with Type I diabetes and not once have I ever considered him disabled. If he lost a limb or his eyesight because of the diabetes, then he would be disabled but as of now he's always done exactly what any other kids has done.

If we can summon the spirit of the late Ron Santo, who was diagnosed with diabetes as a child, he will tell you just how much more he had to go through to play at the major league level than a normal person with major league talent had to go through.

Also, Jim Eisenreich suffered from Tourette's Syndrome, and I do believe that is considered a disability, as many more severe cases involved involuntary muscle movement as well.

Treating diabetes fifty years ago was night and day, so I'm sure it was very challenging. With the technology today, it is no big deal.
