I just found some pictures from a few years back at Fenway. It got me remembering what happened when I went, and the experience I had with Mark Malaska.

I had a Manny Ramirez jersey that I wanted the whole team to sign and at the time I think I had like 4 autos on it. Anyways, Im standing there waiting for him to come over and when he reaches me, he turns the jersey around, sees its Mannys number and throws the shirt at me refusing to sign it. He says "I dont sign other players jerseys, dude, your a joke. Go get one of my jerseys then Ill sign it smart guy." I respond with, "Well, If you were good maybe they would make your jersey and sell it but your not and they dont make Mark Malaska jerseys." He looked wicked pissed, but moved on. About 5 minutes later, as Im waiting for more players to come out, he walks by me, grabs the jersey (I didnt even see him coming) and signs it!

Another time I was waiting near the dugout and Craig Breslow is signing for 3 of my friends Im at the game with. Right before he got to me the National Anthem starts and everyone stops and turns towards the flag. The National Anthem ends and he starts signing for the person right next to me on the other side where he had been signing! Skipped right over me lol. They brought him in during the game later on, he got shelled and I dont think he pitched again for the Red Sox.

Did he or you apologize about the awkward moment?

It was pretty cool of him to sign it.

Re: Any stories of akward experiences getting autos at games?

I was at a mets game last year and I had one of those mini mets bats with me. Pedro Feliciano comes out of the bullpen to sign before the game started. he was signing down the 1st base line and I was in the 2nd row. He was signing up a storm but kept skipping over me. He would look at me at then sign for the person next to me. I kept following him down the line as he signed but he just kept skipping over me. I gave up after a few trys becusause I realized I was wasting my time on a rp in one of the worst bullpens in baseball :D.

Re: Any stories of akward experiences getting autos at games?

This happened a few years ago when I was at the braves spring training with a friend.

A guy that my parents knew knows Terry pendelton and he told him that we were coming down for a few games. Well we get there and we kinda knew him already so we talked for a minute an gave him some stuff to get signed. Well while we were talking to him, a bunch of other people came over for his auto. They all gave him stuff to sign and he caught them all and threw them back at them. He stopped and said, "I'm siging for these two boys first. I'll get to you after I'm done with them." then they all boo'ed him

I just thought it was pretty cool

I had Antonio Alfonseca call me a "Flippin Traitor" in 2002.

Long story short, I got his auto in florida and chatted with him a bit (Marlins are my Number 1 Team)

Fly to New York, and go to a Mets Marlins game with my grandfather (Mets are my Number 2 Team, and wore my mets stuff).

I'm hanging out by the Marlins side of the fence, and Pulpo sees me, calls me a "Flippin Traitor" and keeps ragging on me the whole time.

Talked to him again and got another nice autograph. I'll never forget that moment.

I also got AJ Burnett, Alex Gonzalez, Mike Lowell, and soemone else that day. It was pretty friggin cool.

Not exactly on-topic, but this was pretty awkward for me.

I was at an A's game in Oakland against the Phillies...

Whenever Jimmy Rollins would come up, this lady behind me would stand up screaming "JIMMY!!! JIMMY!!!" while ringing a cowbell...by his third at-bat, I couldn't take it anymore; and I told her if she could *please* be quiet and stop doing that.

...it didn't even click in my mind that Rollins is actually from Oakland...and that he might have huge fans at the game...

....like his mom.

Nothing too weird.I have had a few guys act rudely but I can't say anything too bad as long as they signed. But I do get a little peeved when they get stupid about what they will and won't sign.Even after you keep your trap shut and are ready to move on(I am looking at you Latroy Hawkins).

Re: Any stories of akward experiences getting autos at games?

A Turner Field autograph session "handler" got Derek Lowe pissed off at me. It was a charity signing and I gave 2 donations, 1 for me (a OMLB), 1 for Gilmore (a RC). I had everything out ready to be signed and handed it off to the employee to hand to Derek. Well, Derek starts to sign the OMLB w/ the specialty marker I'd brought for the card, and I ask him to if he could use a ball point, which he does, although he gets annoyed and only signs about half his sig.

Right after this, he signs the card w/ the marker and it just disappears (wasn't rubbed down well). He say's "You should've trusted the expert with the pens." For some reason, I apologize and he agrees to sign back over it (disappears again). I said thanks and moved on.

Funny thing though, a month later, he signs a A&G perfectly before a game and was in a great mood. I'm guessing the scheduled autograph signing thing had him in a bad mood to begin with.

Yeah...I don't really like that when they get an attitude because you wanted it signed in a special pen or marker.I get a lot of looks when I tell the athlete to use my pen or marker even though they have some at the table for them to use.I had Steve Slaton try that on me and I told him no because I had Matt Schaub sign a football for me that got messed up because I allowed him to use the marker Academy provided for him(the event was at Academy and they provide markers for the players to sign with) so I wasn't doing that again. He just shook his head and signed with mine.I try not to be an ass but if you will be kind enough to sign...sign it how I want.Otherwise don't sign for me at all.Because I know what I want signed, where I want it signed and with what I want it signed with. You just play and leave the autograph utensils up to me.

Re: Any stories of akward experiences getting autos at games?

I got the best one yet. I was waiting outside for the Portland Sea Dogs after the game to get some autos. Here comes Lars Anderson and he signs my card. He then goes over and signs for about 30 more. I then ask him to sign my ball because I forgot about it in my bag. I said, "Lars, may I have your auto again?" He looks at me funny and says, "Sure brother, I will be your sloppy seconds!" I pissed myself in laughter.

Re: Any stories of akward experiences getting autos at games?

Not "awkward" in the least, but the thread seems to have morphed into just plain old interesting stories, so I'll share. Last year I brought a minor league game used jersey for Mike Cameron to sign at a Brewers/Nationals game. When he approached me and saw it his eyes got really wide and he was transfixed in disbelief for a second. After exclaiming "where the hell did you get this?!" he inspected it, "yup, size 44. wow man, where'd you get this?", signed it and gave it back to me. I then showed him a game used fielding glove of his I brought with me (I read an interview where he states he's only used 4 gloves in his career) and he just walked away shaking his head. I've since sold most of my collection (including the aforementioned glove) but the jersey will be the last thing to go. It was certainly a cool day, thanks for letting me share.

I had Chase Utley's Batavia Muckdog's jersey - first professional jersey he ever wore. Bought it straight from the team back when he was in the minors for $50 or so. Had him sign it about 3-4 years ago - he had no desire to discuss the jersey at all. (shrug) He was pleasant and personable when taking pictures with my son and wrote nice inscriptions, but he had no interest in the jersey.

FWIW, I sold it about 3 years ago -- a few years too early -- for about $1250.

 I'd say that was a worthy investment! sucks to hear he didn't even acknowledge the significance of the jersey though
