Anyone own a 99 SI GOTG Reggie Jackson "Mr. October" Inscription Auto? Need image clarification

Hey all,

I just won one of these on ebay and upon closer inspection of the image, I'm worried that the "Mr. October" inscription was added later and therefore inauthentic. While there does exist a variation of the card that has this inscription as well as the "HOF" designation, it seems easy to fake, so I'd love to have something to compare my copy to.

Thanks in advance, I gotta believe someone on the board has or has had one of these.

Thanks, this is really helpful and raises all sorts of red flags. Here is the copy I bought - initial suspicion based on the (relatively) low ending price I won it for, which got me thinking that maybe people in the know realized the difference in inscription relative to Reggie's autograph. Note the difference in the "R" in "October" on the ebay listing compared to the "R" at the beginning of his name, and now compared to this scan.

If anyone else has a copy I'd appreciate posting so we have another comparison point.

Final note - what happens if I don't pay? I've never NOT paid for an ebay item, what if I contact the seller explaining my reservations and desire to cancel the transaction and he doesn't agree? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Not trying to be a jerk but shouldnt you have done your due diligence BEFORE you agreed to purchase this item?

If you dont pay you will get a none-payer bidder warning and if you get X-amount of them you will be barred from using Ebay. This doesnt stop many people though as it is fairly easy to screw the seller and back out of a deal. I try and look at it like maybe the seller is trying to raise money for his kids Christmas and backing out of a purchase just messes up his plans too.

Is this the one you are asking about? If it is, I think it is fine. Why would Reggie sign so high in the blank space if he did not intend to add the inscription himself. I don't see a problem with it.

Yes, thanks jbrown - clearly I'm an idiot and forgot to post the link. That's basically all I'm looking for, opinions on whether or not it was added later. Your point seems to make some sense, I'll have to compare it to my uninscribed copy.

Mchenry - if he's selling a flawed or altered card, how does that make me the jerk? If I found out about it after I received and wanted a refund, how is that any different? By this reasoning, it's a-ok to screw the buyer as long as they don't catch you. I'm as good an ebayer as there is and clearly want the card, I just want to make sure I'm buying what I thought I was buying.

I think since you already agreed to the purchase via Ebay and you have already been notified to pay the best action to due is to pay for it. Once it is received, if the card is altered you can then return it due to false advertisement and get your money back. That way you don't get dinged at all, or if you do Ebay should clear that up right away.

I'm pretty confident that the one you just won is authentic.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. Paid today.

Again, not trying to get out of winning an auction - I'm THRILLED I won this, especially at that price relative to what I've seen them get in the past. I just want to ensure I'm getting what I'm expecting to get.

Appreciate the dialogue.

As to the debate above, I know how hard it is to show an active auction with a question in fear that you will lose the auction, so I cannot blame you there. To that end, I think you almost would have to be willing to get the card in hand before sending it back as "altered" (though there would be no harm in pointing out to the seller that you found information after the auction ended that made this action likely).

I will add that I think the debate is moot becasue you won a legit card.

Nice pick up! That is a great card from an all-time great set.

Thanks - only need the HOF to have the complete set from baseball! Missing a few still from football (Namath, Starr, Harris and Bradshaw) if any members can help out.

Happy Holidays.
