Picked up this book the other day -- it's published by The Onion. It's essentially an atlas for those who are not easily offended. It has about a page on each country, each with some type of background on the history and a map with obscene or hilariously offensive captions.
I thought the Dominican Republic one was kind of funny in regards to baseball -- these are just some highlights of the page.
Dominican Republic -- "A Great Ballpark in a Bad Neighborhood"
The Dominican Republic has produced some of the world's wealthiest baseball players, who each year help their impoverished, crime-ridden hometowns by sending back millions of dollars worth of much needed baseball stadiums and emergency autographed merchandise.
Official Language: Infield chatter
Terrain: 50% Grass, 50% Astroturf
Illicit Drugs: Never knowingly took steroids
Economy: Driven by MLB agent Scott Boras
International Disputes: Still arguing with Cuba over play at the plate from 2006 WBC
Age Structure: Everyone under 30, according to birth certificates
The map has some rather funny captions such as "City's economy depending on Miguel Tejada hitting a home run right now," "Man using sex metaphors to describe his baseball experience," Schoolchildren learning to sign name on baseball," "Drunken Dominican man sliding into home," and "High-speed pitching machines used to repel immigrating Haitians."
