When you sit back and think about it, this is so absurd. People are arguing, hating, loving, and craziest of all, investing in a boy. A high school junior. When you really think about it, isn't it all just completely nuts?

So nuts that people invested heavily in Angel Villalona and Michael Ynoa in last year's Bowman products when they were 16-17. Harper is just getting more exposure.

I have no interest in Harper one way or the other. I'll wait until he's drafted to even begin to care. The only thing that made me cringe is that he's considering taking a shortcut to get out of high school. Obviously it's his decision (though I would bet with a ton of influence from Boras) but I would always choose education over earnings. Even if I were a highly touted high-school athlete, I'd take advantage of a four-year scholarship before turning pro. But again, that's just me.
He's a Sophmore actually, and like pujolsjunkie said Angel Villalona was 17 when his chrome auto came out and Ynoa is 16-17 and Yorman Rodriguez (Reds prospect) is 16 and will probably have cards in 2010.

For some reason I am just really disheartened by a large portion of
our membership here this week :(

I know we disagreed in the UD/Razor thread, but I completely agree with you here.

It's sad to see people wish physical harm on someone they don't know, by reading an article written by someone else.

Civil disagreements are one of the great things about forums like this. As far as I'm concerned, there was no problem between us. Just the things being said here and in the Mr. Mint thread as well have really gotten to me, and made me feel differently about a lot of our members. I don't know, maybe it's just ass-clown week here at the Good Ole FCB. I'm thinking of changing my sig to something like this:

chashawk is a d-bag who will call you out on your bullshat when he deems it appropriate

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I'm really glad my avatar bothered you so much that you had to get one of your own.

Also, if Harper enters the draft next year he'll be 17, then turn 18 at the end of the year, spending his first full season in the minors at 18. That happens with players every year in the draft, and ofcourse it's common to see latin players playing the entire season at 17. Wilmer Flores didn't turn 17 until late last season. Really not a big deal.

Bryce Harper is a practicing Mormon and goes to what we call "early morning seminary", so while definitely possible, I probably believe he is not using any drugs or PEDS. If I were his parents though, I would be absolutely encouraging education and would be shielding him from magazines such as SI. Other than a heap of pressure, what will that gain him? I would hate for a huge talent to go Josh Hamilton before he sees the light. Playing for the Yankees though and living in Nevada? Front runner.

I figured that when I read the SI article and it said he goes to religous services every morning and the fact that he has what 5 brothers and sisters and his parents always talk about God.

I have no problem with good natured ribbing. One of the reasons I am constantly screwing with Cubs fans is that so many of them take it so personally.

oh my god... this is the same type **** that makes me not want to talk or watch sports anymore. sports talk radio goes day to day focusing on the negative aspects of professional sports! right now i dont give 2 drops of rat piss if a 16 yr old child is on the cover of si or not they after all do report on sports and sports stories... he is good at what he does and he deserves to take pride in his accomplishments and set lofty goals for himself. if this kid didnt want to be the best of all time and in the hof i would drive to his house and shake the holy **** out of him myself.

i am quite sure that if i would have asked any of you at 16 what you wanted to do you wouldnt say be the 5th or 6th best at something. you were the best looking, best drinker, best dancer, best talker, smartest kid with the best looking girlfriend who had the sweetest rack. now does a 16yr old need an attitude adjustment? hell yes! i am 33 1/2 and i need an attitude adjustment. however wishing a kid gets hit by a car so he fails to get the opportunity to fulfill his and millions of other peoples dreams is sickening at the best and contempt towards any child with a knack for anything at worst. so good for him... good for his parents for giving him some praise instead of teaching him that he needs to blend in with the crowd.

i hope he succeeds and makes his dreams come true! i hope he is the best player of all time so i can say i watched him play to my grandchildren. if he doesnt pan out i hope he avoids mental problems and the road traveled by many before him.

Bryce is being interviewed right now on the Las Vegas 51s broadcast. Sounds really professional, nothing like a 16 year old. And he is also very "confident" in his abilities, lol. It's a good interview though.

When asked what his baseball dream's are:

"I want to make the Hall of Fame, I want to be the best baseball player ever."
