Those are all in their cases and all my duplicates of those are also in thief cases. I don't take them out myself but I would not shy away from trading or purchasing one out of the case.
I do have some Topps Pristine that are loose that originally were in cases like these.

Some of those Topps cases are bulky, and could see why someone would want to take them out.I have a Bowman Sterling buyback autograph I left in the bulky case though.

So why didn't he wear it in the first period?

Because USA hockey had two sets made with the sole intention of selling them after the Olympics to raise money for USA hockey, so set 1 was worn during warmups and the first, set 2 was worn during the second and third periods.
