A collector on another board posted that they weren't really a fan of the player they collected but were still super collecting that player. This idea blew me away as I had never heard of this before. Are there any other collectors who collect/super collect a player they aren't a fan of?

Here's the three guys I "super collect". Really I'm a team collector (both college with the Hurricanes and pro with the Cowboys. I do have player focuses though, and I try to get these guys mainly.

Just look at these faces and tell me how you couldn't love them (rhetorical, no hating please  ). I certainly am a fan, and am very supportive of Nore come hell or high water (the only one actively in the NFL until Javarris gets drafted next week).

Yeah, it seems kind of silly, but I admit I more or less did that once.

It was when I just got back into collecting and basketball season had started. Everyone on Beckett obviously was always showing off their PC's and it was something I wanted to do, but the rookies from my favorite pro and college teams were too expensive. So I ended up picking someone else who's cards I could afford - more or less simply based on what I read about him, price/potential and he was from the Big East.

To be fair, once I made that decision I then followed him every night thus becoming a "fan". Not something I'd do again though, since he's not a part of a team I collect - He really did nothing in the league and now I have a collection worth hardly anything and I really have little attachment too. Though when I go check the cards out I do remember that they were fun to hunt down and collect and it's pretty much a documentation of every release and how every set looked from that year's basketball releases.

I should note that I do pick up stuff of guys I am not a fan of or downright hate such as Vince Wilfork because I'm a fan of the school.

I'd even be open to getting a Roy Williams or Bobby Carpenter Cowboys card if the price was right, even though I hate them and wish they weren't part of the Cowboys franchise.

LOL, I understand about adding cards of players you might not be a fan of if you are following a team or putting a set together. Nothing worse than paying a high price for a guy you aren't a fan of but need.

This. I don't like the phrase "super collector" because it's so plain and vanilla. You could pull an auto and have a couple numbered RC's and I've seen people call themselves super collector's. That's just an insult to those who go balls out on player collections.

Yea, that was the first time I saw that type of collecting. Nothing against it, just different.

I collect Jamal Lewis and Yamon Figurs. Because i like them and i can afford to collect them.

Why would you spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on a player if your don't like them.

That's a head scratcher to me too. I would think 90% of the time it's the other way around.

i wasn't a rhett bomar fan at first, and i'll admit that, but its turned into a hobby of its own. now i find myself picking up exclusively bomar cards, and trying to watch and see if he signs on with a team from the giants practice squad. i'm not much of a team collector, nor do i have the funds to build a nice collection of a mid-high end player, so bomar is perfect

I collect Tyson Jackson but I'm not a fan of his or the Chiefs. I wanted to start a player collection and happened to pull an auto of his #/25. I couple weeks earlier I bought an auto of his #/25 because I thought it was a good price. So now I collect him. Don't see what's so strange about that.

i've been on every side of this. i wouldnt consider any of these 'super' collections but...

knowshon i collect because i went to college with him and liked him since the day he signed at UGA.

when i was a kid i pulled a 92 action packed 24kt gold barry sanders auto redemption... didnt care much about barry at that point but he instantly became my favorite player. not a bad choice to be your favorite, of course, but as far as i can remember this was the starting point.

then last year i pulled a bunch of good Ramses Barden autos and decided to pick up a few others just to do it. did not and do not currently care one bit about Barden.

Ok for those that aren't on SCF I'll try to justify my reasoning since this thread is about me.

First its not that I dislike Clayton as I don't think I could collect someone that I flat out don't like. I don't really have any strong feelings towards him. He's on my favorite team and I really just picked out someone that was cheap and that had tons of cards produced.

For the most part I just really like the collecting aspect. My desire to have every Clayton card out there and to have the best Clayton collection is what drives me. I would argue that I have a better Clayton collection than pretty much any other one that I've seen on numerous forums. Thats why I collect.

Belive me, I love my collection and would be hard pressed to move any of it but its because of the individual cards, and not because of who is on the card. It might seem a bit off but thats pretty much the case with all 3 of my main player collections.

I broke into the hobby during the late 80's/early 90's so super collecting wasn't really an option so the idea of collecting a player you weren't a fan of is new to me. I wonder if the introduction of high end brands created this type of collector.

You did inspire the thread, but it was because your response was so unique and unexpected. I do not think this style of collecting needs to be justified, but it is interesting to see that others choose this path.

In my early years in the hobby I did amass cards of guys I had little interest in. More of a speculation rather than collection. I haven't done that in at least 7 years now though. I collect only what I like and will seldom let go of if ever.

There's enough money to be wasted in this hobby let alone getting things with no signifigant interest.

I see speculating and prosepecting as different than collecting/super collecting. If you are picking up cards w/ the hopes of flipping w/ no interest in the player than you aren't really collecting.

Brand really had nothing to do with it for me because I really don't consider SPA or Heroes (the other #/25 auto) a "high end" brand. It was a matter of convenience. I pulled 2 autos from the packs that I bought and I haven't seen many other cards of the other guy I pulled (Eric Wood). I think maybe 10% of my collection is from a high end brand (National Treasures and Unique). There would still be more than enough cards if these brands weren't out there at all.
