Nolan was in last week's hotlist: http://www.freedomcardboard.com/?p=737 and I was checking out some of his cards, things are certainly moving up.

Orange Ref ending tonight @ $155: [phil:3ghxe513]380237954322[/phil:3ghxe513]

Refractor sold last night for $20: [phil:3ghxe513]270585388856[/phil:3ghxe513] - previously $10ish card
Orange Ref sold on Memorial Day for $172: [phil:3ghxe513]110537711004[/phil:3ghxe513]
Gold Ref sold Sunday for $111: [phil:3ghxe513]190400551258[/phil:3ghxe513]
Gold Ref sold Sunday for $145: [phil:3ghxe513]290438210488[/phil:3ghxe513]
Gold Ref sold Sunday for $141: [phil:3ghxe513]180513276111[/phil:3ghxe513]

So those that bought in really early are already in the black.

Interestingly enough, his elite autos are still available at just over $6 per, might be a good buy considering all the Chrome hype: [phil:3ghxe513]310222231182[/phil:3ghxe513]

It seems to me that plates are such a crapshoot from an investing perspective. You just never know what you are going to get for them, some people (me) think they are so-so and would never even pay "Gold Refractor" value for them. However, it seems that others, player collectors in particular, go bananas over them and some sell for huge bucks.

Have you had luck investing in prospect plates in the past?

Yes I have, but you have to be patient. All you need is for one person to see the price of what a gold and orange are selling for and then see that I have my "1/1" Plate with a BIN that falls between those two prices and somone will find it to be a good deal.

For example
Gold is selling for $125
Orange $150
I would list the plate for $140. Someone will view it as it is a 1/1 or only 4 plates were made and think the $140 asking price is a steal. Sometimes I would list it with a BIN/BO of $200, and see what type of offers I get

I never list a plate in an auction format, only BIN

That makes sense, I would think patience would be an important part of that equation.

Patience is key
Thus far I have an Iglesis, Arenado and a JR Murphy unautographed. The Murphy came in a lot of 4 chrome autos and 1 refractor for less then $60. I typically do not buy unautographed plates but 5 autos and a plate for $60 to me was a very nice price

To the best of my knowledge plates do not come in retail

Do those plates come in retail? Even the un-autoed ones?

No, all plates are jumbo only.

Ever since FCB did an article on Arenado, his stuff seemed to instantly double.

And it doesn't hurt that he has been playing pretty good in first few weeks.

his cards were trending upward before the hot list appearance

The Hot List is reactionary to market trends...so he already had to move up before ever making it. It is possible that the list alerts others to someone like Nolan and therefore adds to the move up but it certainly doesn't start it.

All it took was Gilmo buying them up and the prices doubled. The big Guy has some followers.

I did go through ebay and hit every BIN that was close to market.

Didn't you do that last year with Neftali? Which worked all ok when he started hitting triple digits :)
