If you're a big, athletic shortstop in the Miami area, it's awfully hard to avoid the comparison. Manny Machado hears it constantly. No matter where he goes, the name Alex Rodriguez follows him.

Luis Montanez had a similar comparison, look what happened to him.

Actually, Luis Montanez was compared to Alex Gonzalez...not Alex Rodriguez. At least by Baseball America and other pubs.

And yes, I'm serious.

Is he that good that you would use your 2'nd overall pick on him instead of a stud pitcher like Tailion, Pomeranz, Sale, McGuire etc?

If I was the Pirates GM my answer would be...no.

Yes x 1000

Machado has more upside than Taillon or Pomeranz. Sale and Mcguire were never in talks for the top 3, and rightfully so.

Taillon has tremendous stuff, but the amount of projection is lacking since he is pretty much filled out and maxed out in terms of tools. Pomeranz is in the same boat, unfortunately. Not to say they aren't very good draft prospects, but Machado has much more projection than either of them.

I wouldn't agree Machado has more upside than Taillon, let along much more. Taillon is pretty close to maxed out physically, but physically he's already a beast. I would probably only take Harper and Taillon ahead of Machado, but I think the Pirates will take him because they feel more comfortable with their pitching situation in their system and the ghost of Upton still haunts them, they want an up the middle, impact athlete. As for the others mentioned, I think I like Sale more than most, I'd take him over Pomeranz.

They said all the same stuff about Harold Martinez too. Another Miami Baseball SS...though he now plays more 3rd base.

The minute Martinez hit college ball, he pretty much was a 3B. His size isn't suited for SS anyway, and his power potential plays better at 3B.

I am a HUGE Martinez fan and this season seemed to be a big step in his development. The decision of going to college is doing him well.

I think everyone should probably keep in mind that scouts are actually saying the ARod comps aren't fair or justified. And yes, Harold Martinez drew the comps up until the spring of his Senior season, but it was readily apparent by the Draft of '08 that he wasn't going to sniff the 1st round, let alone get close to those comps - so I think it's safe to say Machado is ahead of Martinez at the same age. I like Machado a lot, and he has a chance to be an above-average ML shortstop, but he doesn't have ARod's power, nor his speed at the same age.

I'm sure you're right and the experts agree too. It's just that I believe pitching is the way to go when your team hasn't had a winning record in 20 yrs. Then again it seems the Pirates front office isn't interested in winning when they trade away all the good players. So I guess they're just looking for a good player that'll bring more prospects once he gets good and traded.

Wacky :?

Well, they still have Pedro Alvarez and Andrew McCutchen.

Then again, if I were them I would want to be traded too.

No, but seriously....Machado is one of the best picks you can get at #2 this year and they should take it. I do think pitching is a major key to building a successful team, although premium positional talent is a must draft if given the chance. Machado is one of those players and pitchers can become anything less than what is expected, especially guys like Taillon.
