Tonight, Alex Rodriguez became the all-time career grand slam leader.
He surpassed Lou Gehrig's record, set 75 years ago.

It made me wonder how many were with and how many were without help. It's still a pretty good feat to get that many, as many were not aided. Plus, there is the added pressure of the situation, which is NOT helped by steroids.

It's one of those stats that's basically worthless though...I mean, sure, there is the clutch factor...but that largely depends on how many times a player has been up-to-bat with 3 men on. 24 grand slams is just a number if they occurred at a lower rate per at bat with 3 on than a regular homer with 2 or less men on.

wow, the lead was buried. Should be Michael Kay ****s on A-Rod's achievement! Good stuff that highlight package with Kay's rambling.

as for the achievement, not impressed with A-Rod's. With that many homers, lots are bound to be grand-slams. I"m more impressed with Gehrig's achievement as he didn't have anywhere as many homers as A-Rod to hit grand slams.

Totally agree here. It'd be interesting to see those numbers... Like how many times someone is up with bases loaded to even have a chance.

I don't get it, I am not an Arod fan by any stretch, but the number is the number. No one has ever said it took Hank Aaron or Babe Ruth so many at bats to get all their home runs. The number is the record, how he got there isn't the issue. Whether he is clutch or not clutch, whether it took him 500 times with babes loaded or 10,000 times...he still owns the record, period. Just saying, it shouldn't matter how he got there or how many tries it took to get there.

And the steroids thing...come on man. I wish people would stop littering other peoples threads with that crap. WE GET IT ALREADY!

I see your point, but what the hell's a thread good for if it doesn't create discussion. Otherwise, this would just be a bunch of congratulatory posts about a somewhat meaningless accomplishment to a man who will never read them. At least the topic took off a bit, and branched into an actual conversation about the record and not just a generic steroid user bash-fest.

I just find it silly and a bit juvenile to complain about valid discussion, even if it isn't praising the record holder. It wasn't an attack, it was just valid discussion about how grand slams, much like RBIs, are largely dependent upon run support. Beyond that, "clutch factor" is an actual statistic, based upon a player's actual performance.

I can only look at it like this. The other players could do it on natural talent. A-Roid needed drugs to do it..

Luck and clutch...

Carlos Lee (17) had as much or more career grand slams than Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Ted Williams, Jimmie Foxx, Griffey Jr, McGwire, Bonds, RJackson, Killebrew, Mantle, Thome, and 2X more than Mays, EMathews, FRobinson, Schmidt, etc. etc. and over 8X more than George Brett (2) ;)
