Re: As a player collector~I suck! Topps TEK *UPDATE pg. 2*

I must say Topps Tek is one of my favorite sets. The excitement of finding another gold is unlike picking up any other random single. I am glad Chavez is only in 1999 instead of all the years but I have had more fun collecting Tek than any other set (Minus 2003 Leaf Certified Materials)

1999 Base Pattern A: 30/30 100%
1999 Gold Pattern A: 20/30 66.6%
1999 Base Pattern B: 30/30 100%
1999 Gold Pattern B: 22/30 73.3%

Re: As a player collector~I suck! Topps TEK *UPDATE pg. 2*

This stuff really is a pain in the cornhole. None of the shops I go to have any singles, and I've only found a decent stock at one dealer table, once, about 30 cards total in a dime box. I might be the worst player collector for this stuff:

1998

Jim Edmonds - 1/90
Darin Erstad - 1/90
Troy Glaus - 1/90
Mark Grace - 1/90

1999

Andres Galarraga - 2/60
Larry Walker - 3/60
Troy Glaus - 2/60 and 1 Gold
Craig Biggio - 1/60
Adrian Beltre - 1/60
Jim Thome - 1/60
Mark Grace - 2/60
Scott Rolen - 2/60
Darin Erstad - 2/60
Todd Helton - 2/60
Jason Kendall - 2/60
Nomar - 2/60

2000

Jim Thome - 2/15
JD Drew - 4/15
Larry Walker - 3/15
Scott Rolen - 4/15
Sean Casey - 4/15

I don't have a single one for most of my players for most years, and I doubt I'll ever get to the point where I can complete a year for a player.

I gotta ask, do you collect game used and autos too?

Has anyone ever completed a full master set of Topps Tek? The 1998 set would be 8100 cards for the base alone, not counting the diffractors. Is that even humanly possible?

Re: As a player collector~I suck! Topps TEK *UPDATE pg. 2*

I'm pretty darn jealous of player collections that have the Tek sets to chase. If Butler had started his career a few years later, he might have had a good chance to be included in the '98 set. I'm a huge fan of variation rainbows, and the '98 would have been a blast to chase.

Did any of you ever trade/deal with "togatx"? I used to see his posts all the time on the old usenet boards. He was chasing the 8100 card set (all 90 players, all 90 variations). If I'm not mistaken, he was able to finish it up.

There was a collector who went by the name togaman on various message boards building this set and I know he completed the base, not sure on the diffractors.

Here is one of his post from thebench.

Re: As a player collector~I suck! Topps TEK *UPDATE pg. 2*

Well since my last post in this thread I'm pleased to say that I've more than doubled my Olerud Teks. Unfortunately, all that means is that I've gone from 6/90 to 13/90 for the 1998 base, and 1 of 90 for the Diffractors. Still looking for base patterns, but the Diffractors are not a priority (nor will they likely ever be).

I feel really bad for anyone who collects McGwire, Clemens, or Raul Mondesi. Not only do they have 90 variants of each base, plus 90 variants of each Diffractor, there are also 90 different variants of the Pre-Production cards for those three. I can't imagine how hard those are to find!

McGwire, Clemens and Mondesi "only" have 30 Pre-Production cards each (e.g., McGwire has a Pre-Production card for patterns 2, 5, 8... 89). However, each of the 30 Pre-Production cards has a gold parallel, of which probably only 1-2 were printed per pattern. It would no doubt be easier to get 90 Pre-Productions than the 30 + 30 gold.

They did Gold parallels for the 1998 Tek Pre-Production? Did you mean Diffractors? The Gold were 1999.

Not Diffractors (which paralleled the 90 card per player base set), but yes, a gold Pre-Production parallel. Here's the master McGwire Tek list for 1998-2000 (404 cards!), which has some scans of them:

Code:

(Because of the brackets, posting the URL by itself doesn't work. Just copy and paste)
