can put together a fairly impressive player collection of just about any player who has played in the last 25 to 30 years. The question is just who among the big names of that era is worth holding onto for investment purposes, and the inevitable answer to that question is probably no one. The players that I have player collected over the years have been Cal Ripken, Jr., Eddie Murray, and Barry Bonds.

I intend to put together player collections of at least 6 players from what I have now, and would appreciate some input from the board as to just who among the following players may have some small chance of having some future value. Just off the top of my head, I have listed the following players as being among the best and most collectible of the last 30 years:

Position players -

Tony Gwynn, Mark McGwire, Frank Thomas, Chipper Jones, Albert Pujols, Ichiro Suzuki, Alex Rodriguez, Ken Griffey, Jr., Jim Thome, Joe Mauer, Mark Texiera, George Brett, Kirby Puckett, Wade Boggs, Vlad Guerrero, Ryan Howard, Manny Ramirez, David Wright, Robin Yount, and Prince Fielder

Pitchers -

Greg Maddux, Roger Clemens, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Mike Mussina, Nolan Ryan, Curt Schilling, Tin Lincecum, Randy Johnson, and Roy Halladay.

Please feel free to add anyone else you care to onto the list, and give some pros and cons as to whom I should consider keeping a collection of.

Thanks for all of your help and opinions.

In terms of future value
Pujols- One of the greatest.
Ichiro- Always have the Asian market.
Griffey- I think we will see his career in a much better light post-retirement.
Vlad- Incredibly underrated. First ballot HOFer.

Not too familiar with the pitchers' prices. I'd avoid Moose and Schilling for sure though.

I can tell you that puckett has a huge following as it is and every year that goes by it seems I pay 8% more each year that passes. I'd suggest holding his stuff

Thanks for the input so far - other names I have taken under consideration:

Position players - Ivan Rodriguez, Mike Piazza, Mike Schmidt
Pitchers - Johan Santana, Pedro Martinez.

I will be selecting one player a day for the next week to start a player collection of. Today's selection is a fairly easy one - Albert Pujols, who, excepting injury or some unexpected scandal, may put up numbers never before seen.

If you decide to collect Piazza, (1st ballot), we can trade doubles. I have about 1,000 different doubles if not more. Good luck on whatever you decide.

Back after a couple of days off and ready to move forward on this project. I have deceided to collect a player from each position, and with my initial selection of Albert Pujols I have my first baseman. I will collect an infielder from each position, one catcher, 3 outfielders, 4 starting pitchers, one relief pitcher, and one DH/Utility.

Today's selection will be a starting pitcher - Greg Maddux.

So the team so far

If you are talking investment, I don't think any of the guys you mentioned are going to pay off that much. It's not like you can buy Pujols, Jeter, etc on the cheap and resell later. I collect Nolan Ryan because he is my favorite player, as an investment I don't think I could make out very well if I sold all my stuff. To me, you'd have to get the guy on the way up to make it a worthwhile investment.

Well, so much for keeping this updated at a rate of 1 per day.

I have moved on a little with this project and have added the following boldedplayers and positions:

So far:

P-Greg Maddux
P-Nolan Ryan
P-Randy Johnson
P-Tom Glavine
RP
C
1B-Albert Pujols
2B
SS-Derek Jeter
3B-Alex Rodriguez
OF-Ichiro Suzuki
OF-Tony Gwynn
OF-Ken Griffey, Jr.
DH/Utility

Hope to keep up and select one per day.

Jim

This leaves me with the following positions to fill:

Relief Pitcher - Mariano Rivera, Lee Smith. Trevor Hoffman
Catcher - Ivan Rodriguez, Mike Piazza, Carlton Fisk, Gary Carter
2B - Jeff Kent, Ryne Sandberg, Roberto Alomar, Craig Biggio
Utility/DH - just about anybody

Anybody have any compelling arguments for or against any of these guys?

Thanks, Jim
