And this is probably the best play at SS I have EVER seen....

That's an impressive play but not the greatest IMO. That play proves that Escobar probably has the best arm of any SS baseball. I think 75% of SS can get that ball 1% would be able to make that throw.

His arm is definitely better than Cabrera's, which in an of itself makes for some highlight reel plays. He's got outstanding range as well.

Cabrera's play was a MILLION times mnore difficult than Escobar's play. Both are nice don't get me wrong, but the ball that Cabrera bare handed was a rocket. Escobar did not have to go far back in the hole on that play and Cabrera not only bare handed his in the whole, but the throw does it for me. Cabrera's throw was difficult.

The point was that Escobar does it more often. And the plays weren't ALL that different. I think you're exaggerating a little.

Escobar's Defense > Cabrera's Defense

(I am NOT HATING ON ASDRUBAL! My point is that this play, although great, isn't CLOSE to what it would take to be the play of the year. I can come up with five or more plays Escobar has made that would put this one to shame)

Here's just one! Ironically to get....Asdrubal Cabrera

That was an easier version of Asdrubal's play...

It made play of the week and he has had a total of 3 #1 web gems this year already.

that is an awesome play!

the one memorable top ss play that i can evern recall til this day was the ozzie smith diving to his left on a hard hit grounder. takes a super bounce up and while he's landing, reaches up with his bare hand and catches the ball, throws out the runner...sickest play ever. wish i can find that video somehow

dave

I completely agree. I still haven't seen a play made by a shortstop that tops Ozzie's. Literally jawdropping.

I mean seriously.....this was ONE INNING last season.

From what I've seen in this thread, Escobar makes great plays, and it he makes it look really hard. This impresses some people. Asdrubal's problem is he makes nearly impossible plays look easy.

Take the second out in the inning you gave as an example. That is a routine play that any major leaguer can make. He almost missed it, barely snow coned it... to you it looked really difficult and impressive. To me, it seemed like he almost dropped the ball on a relatively easy play.

Ozzie Smith's play impresses me. He was already committed to a course of action when these changed (the ball hit a rock). While he was in mid-air he changed his course of action in a split second... and then successfully pulled it off. Like the play where the ball hits the glove and Asdrubal completely changes direction, drops to his butt, makes the grab, checks the runner at third, throws to first for the out. All in a second and a half or so.

Of course, I watch Asdrubal just about every day, and rarely see Escobar play. So maybe there are better examples of his work out there that would impress me more.
