Pujols is number one easily, but Mauer is top 5. If we go only by last years number, Mauer is 2nd only to Pujols.

Right now, and for this decade, #1 & #2 are Pujols and Arod. In either order. So no, Mauer is not #2 to Pujols in any way, shape or form. Period.

 1 is mine
1 is mine as well.

There are four now, but still. I think Pujols has the edge, but not by that much? :?

Why is this even a question? Seriously. Must be a Mauer fan trying to convince himself and others that Mauer is even close to Pujols. Don't get me wrong, Mauer is a good player, solid contact hitter. Great contact hitter. But Pujols is by far the BEST hitter in the game. And I'm not even a fan of Pujols, but facts are facts.

Not a Mauer fan. I just really believe he is on his way to becoming the best player in baseball. I voted for Pujols, because I don't think Mauer is there yet, but I do think someday he will be.

Not as long as there are guys named Arod,Pujols, Hanley, Reyes, Wright, Sizemore, Teixeira, Miguel Cabrera, Chase, Hamilton, Howard and Crawford in the the game. And the list could have went on. Mauers is one of the top catchers. He's great for fantasy league, but nowhere near the best player in baseball. Not even close.

Reyes, Wright (Longoria is better), Sizemore, Teixeira, Cabrera, Hamilton (seriously??), Howard, Crawford (lol I hope that was a joke)....wow you really have no idea how to evaluate players if you think they are as good as Mauer. Your opinion carries no weight when you say players like that are better than Mauer.

If anyone knocks Pujols off in the next 2 years it will be Hanley, Longoria, or Mauer, they are the only ones young enough that can be expected to improve over that period.

For the decade, I have to agree with you. Right now, however, Arod is not in the top 3. Saying that Arod is a better player than Mauer at this point is laughable.

I agree here. I mean, I have a little bit of home town bias, but Mauer is a DAMN good hitter. If you cant but him in the top 3, you got it messed up imo.

Just Like I felt Sorry for Pujols Those 3 years that Bonds Dominated, I now feel sorry for the Rest of the league as Albert Pujols will Reign Supreme for the Next 5 to 6 Years and May even Take the Player of the decade two decades in a row. Albert is also In his prime and Too me is just getting started. He will be close to another triple crown again next year. Mauer is good but I got to see him put up those numbers for the next 7 years as Albert has done it since day 1, but even if he does by that time Pujols will have even larger better overall numbers and I dont see Mauer or anyone catching him soon.

I never said Mauer wasn't a great hitter. Look back and you'll see that's exactly what I said. But then a few of you got all crazy by trying to say Mauer is better than Arod  Mauer isn't even top 5, nevermind top 3. He puts it all together 1 season and a few of you are riding his jock. Funny. I'm not saying he's crap, but damn, give him a few more years of last seasons production before you start molded his HOF bust. Better than Arod and up there with Pujols. LMAO!! Sorry, I just can't stop laughing, seriously laughing.

What it comes down to is that players are in their primes up until about age 30-32. Mauer is just now entering his prime, as evidenced by his power from last year. Power is the last tool to develop. Pujols will be declining in the next couple of years so it's reasonable to expect someone to overtake him. As I mentioned in my previous post, it will have to be someone still on the upswing of their career like a Mauer, Hanley or Longoria instead of someone on the decline like A-Rod.

some of the responses in this thread are so idiotic they aren't even really worthy of a response.

I agree with you to a certain extent. But can you please provide a list of hitters better than Mauer?

i just dont see how arod is on the decline (did you guys watch any of last years postseason?) and yess he only had 30 bombs and 100 rbis, but he was out the whole first part of the season with a hip injury and than the first month he was back he was basically in spring training mode, im sorry but im taking arod over mauer next year...i would obviously start a team with mauer because of his age but for me it goes pujols than arod...also i am surprised i havent heard brauns name thrown around

I already did. Apparently you want to put Mauer's .360+ as the only mark. As far as better all around batters (avg, rbi, runs, hrs) Pujols, Arod, Hanley, Howard, Teixeira & Cabrera.

That's my top 6. All above Mauer.

And I don't want to hear squat about Mauer's 28 hr's lol He hit 13 only once and nothing over 9 in any other season in 6 big league season  I'll change my tune IF he rattles off 28 or more for the next 8-10 years. But my money is that he average 7-10 a year with great years garnishing 15 hr's.

rbi and runs don't mean anything in determining who the best batter is. Neither does average really.

Also, insisting that Howard is a better hitter than Mauer is ridiculous, it really hurts your credibility. What happened to Reyes, Wright, Crawford, and Hamilton though?

Okay, well than put into consideration stike outs and other neg. statistics. To me, that changes alot of it.

Mauer is probably considered the second best player in baseball because first of all, he is a catcher.

I don't know if being a catcher is cause to overrate him just a tad, but [if healthy] Mauer will continue to be a beast, while playing the most demanding position on the field.

Mauer has already won three batting titles, now may be hitting for 30 home run power, so now his power numbers go all the way up.

In addition, he posted a .444 on-base percentage in 2009, which blows away most hitters not named Albert Pujols.

Oh, yeah - he is going to be all of 27 in 2010 - there are ideally more seasons for him to generate great numbers.
