Just found this thread. Wonderful stuff all around. I found a signed first edition of a John Cage book at a university library book sale for 50 cents. Same place I found a first edition of a Nietzche volume in German, published while he alive. That one set me back $5, haha.

I love all the beat stuff. Can't say I have any autos, but I do have a first edition paperback of Junkie and Naked Lunch, as well as a copy of the first City Lights Journal.

Now that's know this is here, I'll scan all th good author stuff I have , when I am reunited with it.

Got another addition to my collection from an online purchase.

This will be part of my Six Degrees of Kerouac Collection:

Should have another biggie coming in later this week. When I post it up it will require some explanation, but it is one I have been wanting since I was a kid (sort of...) :)

A little background. For those of us who religiously read the Hardy Boys books, we remember that the author of the books was an enigmatic figure named Franklin W. Dixon. Years ago, I found out that Franklin W. Dixon was, indeed, a pseudonym. The real author of the majority of the books was a man named Leslie McFarlane who passed away a few years ago. He wrote an autobiography called "Ghost of the Hardy Boys" which told the story of his life and the writing process. I checked that book out of the library a couple years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I began to look for a signed copy of it and discovered that it was pretty much nonexistent. Not only that, but UNSIGNED collectable copies were unbelievably hard to find, routinely running at close to $100.

Fast forward to a few days ago. Received a tip from a bookbroker I know (might as well say crackdealer) that there was a SIGNED presentation copy available. The kicker? Only $75!

To put it in context, the VERY few McFarlane signed Hardy Boys books I have ever seen have gone for $300-400. This one is probably among the Top 5 in terms of rarity in my collection now.

So, after building it up to ridiculously unattainable heights, here 'tis:

Love those Alex!! I'm looked through hundreds of King, Grisham and Clark books hoping to find one that is signed!! My 13 year old is on a huge King kick and I've purchased a ton of cheap hardcovers for him recently.

Hope all is well with you. Long time no talk ;)

I'm hopefully hitting an area Goodwill on Sunday. Wish me luck......

I've been stuck on King since I was 8 :) Very cool hearing your son is appreciating his work. Best of luck finding some good finds at the shops...King stuff is incredible sale wise. I lucked out with the dual cut as I had it authenticated and made from Leaf. The postcard ran me $58 not authenticated so it was worth a chance and the Koontz was in a book I picked up for $20. Definitely was "picky" as I wanted to have inscriptions and dates so it was well worth the search. It has been awhile and all is GREAT over here. I hope the same for you Boston-ians :)

I haven't gone quality bookhunting in so long... I've probably let a ton slip through my fingers.

I will be hitting up a Goodwill on Tuesday.

Managed to scrape one off the shelves today.

I do say, I hate walking up to the counter with self-help books (about relationships none the less :-?) but a signed book is a signed book...

John Welwood's "Love and Awakening"

I look through Dr. Phil books too, but I've never found one.

It's not the oddest book I've purchased though, so I at least have that going for it.

I need to start keeping an eye out for book signings. I live in the DC area so there have got to be plenty of them around. I've only got a few signed books but love them all the same. My parents have a first edition of The Shining signed by Stephen King from when we used to live up in Maine and he did a signing.

Anyway, my small signed book collection:

James Patterson-The Beach House
Andy Rooney- Common Nonsense
Henry Lee-Famous Crimes Revisited: From Sacco-Vanzetti to O.J. Simpson
Emeril Lagasse- Emeril at the Grill
Curt and Shonda Schilling- The Best Kind of Different
Jim Nantz- Always by My Side

I got Patterson, Rooney, Nantz, and Lee in hardcover at a speaking/book signing. The Emeril and Schillings my parents got at a speaking/signing and gave them to me as Christmas gifts.

New thrift store today. Nice little place on the edge of town, next to a Dollar Tree.

I've been meaning to stop for sometime, glad I stopped today.

Darryl E. Robidoux - "Home After Dark: One Man's Memories"

It has an autographed copy sticker on the outside and on the inside it has a sticker from Bordeaux and his publisher saying that the book is a gift.

I cannot find a ton of information on him outside of what is on the dust jacket, but for $.80, I couldn't go wrong.

Jacket needs some work though. It has 2 sale stickers on it as well as a library classification sticker on the spine, so I have to get all those off.

Keep an eye on Barnes and Noble (if you have any) or any bookstores in general.

This is an example of how I do it:

http://store-locator.barnesandnoble.com/store/2110?cat=AAA&subtype=detailList

I've never actually gone to one (outside of the Michael Oher signing) but it's a great way to keep in touch with who is coming.

Ha! Talk about timing. I was looking in the paper today at upcoming book signings and Colin Powell is going to be at a local Barnes and Noble next weekend. I drove up to get a book today ahead of next Saturday. Unfortunately, according to B&N, he's ONLY signing his newest book (It Worked For Me: In Life and Leadership) that he's there to push. I was hoping to pick up a copy of "A Soldier's Way" and have him sign that one but this will do. I've always had great respect for him.
