Bought two umpire biographies recently. Here is the first.

You're Out and You're Ugly by Durwood Merrill

My second umpire autobiography is Behind the Mask by Dave Pallone.

I am going to be honest. I confused Dave Pallone with Steve Palermo.

It's fine though. The book was cheap and I like that it was signed by both Pallone and his co-writer.

About how many signed books do you have now?

i have a handful of signed books, but was always afraid i'd forget the signature were inside, as I keep most on a bookshelf with the rest of my books. I ended up marking all of them recently with sticky notes in case I am not around and my family needs to deal with them. Hopefully if it comes to that, it that helps them see that these are special books.

One of my favorites, mainly for the obscure autograph, is not even a baseball related content book. It's Peter Guber's book, Tell to Win. Guber is part owner of the Dodgers and I found this an easy way to obtain his signature. Bides that, probably my best signed sports books are Marcus Allen, Rod Carew and Steve Garvey.

That’s baseball, yes.

I have maybe 10 autographed football books and another 25 or so novels and autobiographies.

My best are probably Glory Days by Bruce Springsteen and a first edition of The Last Picture Show by Larry McMurtry.

I have picked up a lot of signed copies of books over the years. Most are baseball. Between signings at our local park and signings in Cooperstown I have quite a few. Each visit to Cooperstown I pick up a book or two at the HOF store that are signed. There is also a hidden book store down the street that always has older copies of books signed by author. Been lucky to pick up some books at the HOF when the players and or authors are there to sign.

I highly recommend this if you are looking to collect books. We currently have a library in our house with some of the non sports books signed. The sports ones have moved to my ball room and have their own book cases based on theme. I have a HOF book case, Yankee case and a general book case. As things grow I might have to include collecting case as I have several.
I did pick up a couple coffee table books back in the day that featured all the cards made Topps. One was for the 50’s and one was the 60’s. Back before I had a lot of money I used these to collect autographs of players I met since I couldn’t afford balls or bats. I highly recommend this with someone on a small budget. I wish they would do one for 70’s, 80’s and 90’s for people who can’t collect entire sets. It also makes it easier to carry a single book with all the players. No need to sleeve cards or store them. It’s all built in to a book!
