Thats the exact attitude he needs to have. You can already see the hatred some people have for this kid, he needs to be able to tune it out and not worry about pleasing everyone. Go out, hit 40hrs a year and you will have plenty of fans.

Well probably not a good idea to throw a ball at a fan, using a corked bat, and trying to run over someone who was egging his house.

In all fairness to Harper, hes 18 and although yeah the fans pay his salary, the organization probably cares more about his results and how his teammates feel about him.

You also have to think what its like to be him.
You cant just say hes a ****** without a) knowing him
and
b) trying to imagine what it would be like if you were him.

The guy wants to be the best baseball player who ever lived.
At 18 years old, I have to just sit back and admire his drive and ambition to excel.

the only thing Harper has done that I haven't agreed with is th eblowing of the kiss after the HR. He may do that once in the bigs. If that happens the pitcher (if he has any balls) will hit the next batter in the lineup AND Harper on his next time up and that will end that.

Everything else he has done is fine. Some people have thin skins these days (players and people here). Some people just look for a reason to bash someone. Maybe you didn't make the baseball team as a kid or you sucked at baseball even though mommy and daddy said you were the greatest. Get over it. Let the kid play it will work itself out. I quote the great Round Mound of Rebound when he said "I am not a role model." this is how Harper should view everything

My only point is that national media opinion is already turning against him, and that is a direct result of his actions.

sports commentators aren't "hating" on Harper.

He's not the #1 draft pick because he has a big heart or she saves puppies and kittens from burning buildings. He's a #1 draft pick because he swings a bat really hard and destroys things. Why is it that every star athlete has to be a model citizen. I just don't get it.

And even if he is a ****** in RL, I don't care. It won't take away from his ability to play the game. He might not have adoring fans, but he'll make the game exciting. I love how people get upset over Harper because he's not the kind of athlete they want him to be. They would rather have him be fake just so he will be more likeable.

JD was 21 when he was drafted once, and 22 when drafted by the Cards.

I would get quite ornery if everyday I had a hoard of autograph seekers mobbing me and following me around everywhere to get me to sign something so they could sell it on ebay or elsewhere.

I sort of disagree. Kids are going to look up to him and emulate him, because he's in the spotlight. It's going to happen. He is, by definition, a role model. Just because you say that you aren't something that you are doesn't mean you aren't.

Athletes are never paid just to shoot a ball into a hoop or hit a ball with a stick. They're paid to entertain and to keep the fans happy. That's why they have to do things like talk to the media or do MLB-sponsored charity events. That's why they can get fined for saying something stupid. How you act outside the lines affects people's image of you, your team, and your sport. Even from a self-interest stand-point, Harper's antics are flat-out stupid. Your future earnings potential is dependent not only on your performance but on the team's ability to market you. Acting like a ********* now will cost you millions later on.
