Let me put a spin on this. Brett Farve was looked at as a role model. He had an ideal "professional" persona for nearly 20 years. On his last season in the NFL, word comes out about his "unprofessional" conduct. Do you think he just suddenly decided to be perverted? Or maybe he's always been a pervert, but he was just hiding it. I don't know which is worse when looking at this from a "role model" perspective. Wolf in sheep clothing?

Athletes should not be expected to be role models. Role models are made, not manufactured. Just because you are the #1 draft pick of any sport, should not make you an instant role model.

On the Brett Farve thing, being a pervert in hiding would have been just fine. If you ask a kid what they want to be when they grow up, they might say "Brett Farve." If you ask them what that means, they might say "I want to throw touchdowns and wave at fans and be famous." Because those are the things they see Brett doing. They don't know he's a pervert.

Athletes are not expected to be role models. They can go get a job at Sears just like anybody else. It is not being the #1 draft pick that makes them role models, it's being in the spot light that does that. If you're a famous athlete kids look up to you and want to emulate you. That is what a role model is. I don't understand how people can say "athletes aren't role models." Is it that you think that kids don't want to act like and grow up to be like their favorite athlete?

The saying is couldn't care less. Saying I could care less is the total opposite meaning. Seems Mr. Harper or whomever wrote that story needs to take a few English classes.

This is one of my all time favorites and I love hearing it. So emphatically defiant and still misses the mark.

We understand what they mean, but irregardless it's wrong. ;)

For all intensive purposes, irregardless is not a word ;)

I'm laughing my ass off right now:

The phrase is "for all intents and purposes."

You shouldn't utilize a colon in your statement.

(And Rico, before you get pissed, I'm not sure you know what's going on...)

Unless all those English infractions were done unintentionally, if that's the case, wow that was hilarious. And in case you don't sift through every thread in every section, there is a great one on the usage of the word utilize in the general chat forum...

"Mr. Harper" probably makes more in a year than you will in your lifetime.

I would say he's doing alright.

One day you are gonna learn that life isn't about how much money you make or what you have.

A.) I disagree. Thanks anyway for the life lesson, dad.
B.) The point was that people pointing out Bryce made a simple English mistake (one that is not only commonly misused, but quite irrelevent) need to re-evaluate their criticism of "Mr. Harper" and move on with their lives.

JD Drew anyone.

How many 18 years old are playing in the mlb NOW ?
JD was 21 when he was drafted once, and 22 when drafted by the Cards.
thats the problem these days. See Hamilton! would Yount have gotten 3000 hits if they brought him up at 22 or 23? NO!
Boggs spent 4 years in the Red Sox minor leagues.

when you have a talent like that they should bring you up and let you play. i hate this "he needs to mature crap". See Hamilton! Josh Hamilton. he matured 10 years later.

What's the story about the old man who is sitting there with all of his material possessions when he suddenly realizes that relationships with people are what make life worth living, and not material possessions? Can't remember the name of it... I think in the end he blows his brains out with his priceless antique pistol, because he realizes that nobody likes him, he's a douchecanoe, and his entire life was pointless. All he has is this stuff.

Maybe I'm confused, and it hasn't been written yet... :?

The whole "hate", "haters", and "haters gon' hate" stuff is really old and played out. If someone is tired of hearing about Harper, instantly they're a hater.

I do not hate Bryce Harper in the slightest. I do hope he succeeds as it would be good for baseball and the hobby. If he has a career half as good as the hype, he'll have a helluva career. Just come and talk to me when he's been producing in MLB for a few years.

That's truly my problem with prospects. I'm so tired of hearing how great someone is when they haven't had 1 major league at bat. "Oh, he'll be the next (insert superstar HOFer's name here)".

I understand that's how it rolls with prospectors, but it does hurt my head. There are a lot more busts than studs. For every person who says that they're not invested and just want to see someone succeed, there are a dozen that try to cash in on anything and everything positive that they can.

Harper is now on Jeter level to me. I don't know how many times I have said that Jeter will be a 1st ballot HOFer and that he has had a great offensive career for a SS. He's not good defensively though. I neither like Jeter nor do I dislike Jeter. Since I think he's poor defensively and have no problem saying that he has won awards that he didn't deserve, I'm called a hater by a lot of people on this board. When it comes to Harper, I have mentioned before how I hope he succeeds. I'm just tired of 10+ threads about him everyday. I'm tired of half the threads on the baseball forum front page either being Harper or some prospect. To the majority, I'm called a hater.

The "hater" bit goes way too far on here. If you don't blow smoke up everyone else's ass and tell them they're special, you're a hater.

Seems much of the time when people throw out the word 'hater' their purpose is to try to maintain a "permissive investment environment" (aka hype) in the hobby.

Given how some people see cards as stocks (LOL), it would be funny to play along and actually substitute a player's name with the name of a real stock to see how silly all of this is. In the present example, substitute 'Bryce Harper' with 'RJ Reynolds' or 'Yum Brands'. If this were a serious board talking about stocks nobody worth a grain of salt would take any advice from people who only talked positively all the time, balance is respected most. Sometimes its worst to be a constant 'lover'.

Question. Does anyone really like Harper? He doesn't seem like a fan favorite type player.

People obviously do...people wants to see the guy succeed even if they don't have a 'stash' of his key cards because he's young, brash, arrogant but seems like he's fulfilled all the immense expectations so far.

When he gets to the Major Leagues, he doesn't have to be a fan favorite type player - he just has to produce like a superstar and people [such as fans, such as the media] will be oblivious / ignorant to any potential shortcomings he'll have either as a player / person.

However, if he stumbles in the Major Leagues and produces not quite at the superstar level expected, people will be calling him J.D. Drew II with the bad **** stache.

I like anyone who enjoys the game of baseball as much as he does. With his drive to succeed I think he will be a great ballplayer, and when he eventually makes it up to the bigs no Nat fans are going to give a shat about his arrogant attitude.
