and I thought a Tom Glavine variant this morning for $120 was high. I never knew that some of these figures were this rare. I'm glad it wound up at a hobby shop instead of a retail store, since there can be problems.

What do you mean by there being problems?

The stuff about retail workers trying to scalp them, like someone posted and you just did. A collector or hobby shop owner had the first crack at it, not a Toys R Us worker.

Okay.I was just wondering if there was something additional I didn't know of.I actually told the dude's manager that asked me if I wanted to buy any of them.Knowing Walmart they didn't do a thing but its pretty piss poor on their part.

The only thing you can do is go up there right when they are stocking and get someone who is not in the toy department to slice open a fresh case. They leave them all on pallets because they figure nobody will mess with them if they are not opened. If you ask someone from the toy department they will tell you no but ask someone from say cosmetics or pets and they will glad to take their box cutter and open it up for you.But this only works in Walmart and I haven't seen the last two series that came out in Walmart.

It said in the auction that this figure was "pulled". How do you pull one of these? Is it just in the delivery box from McFarlane and only the store owners would have the first shot at getting these?

I stopped collecting McFarlanes for this exact reason. I saw Toys R Us employees ripping open the cases and purchasing the variants for their own collections and putting the leftovers on the store shelves.

This is why I am glad I don't really collect action figures or hotwheels any more.A lot of the time the employees would do this for themselves and it ticked me off.At least give us collectors a fair shot. Then it got real bad when I was collecting the Marvel Legends because some of the employees at walmart would see me looking through the figures and they'd ask if I had the variants and when I told them no they asked if I wanted to buy them.Basically these people were buying them at retail and scalping them to collectors.

Screw that. From now on I either pre-order or buy from the very few dealers left.

A friend of mine worked at Toys R Us back in the day, and these same shennanigans went on when the Star Wars cases would come in.

I would think the only way to avoid this would be to sell the Ruths in sealed boxes. That way everyone has an equal shot. I doubt McFarlane cares about that though.

They do it for everything.Star Wars, hotwheels, Marvel Legends, D.C. Legends, Transformers, McFarlane, even the wrestling figures.

Yeah I doubt McFarlane cares one way or the others. As long as they sell a ton of them then why would they?

Ha, I'm very familiar with that. My dad used to leave for work at 5 in the morning and drop me off at my grandma's house when I was a kid. Twice a week, he would stop by Wal Mart and find the pallets of the newly arrived Hot Wheels to try to finish off sets and find a "treasure hunt" car.

pulled just a few weeks ago at Dale'z Kardz & Komicz in Denver, Colorado.

Wow that's right up the road from me. Too bad it's in Colorado Springs though, pretending like you're from Denver never makes you look cooler. Chumps. ;)

The treasure hunts are easy to find.At least around here. All you have to do is drive to a walmart in BFE, somewhere real out of the way and they will never be pulled from the shelves or the cases.I used to do this on my way to or from work when I worked a good bit from the house.Too far to drive just for the heck of it.

In Football there was a Ricky Williams variant in a New Orleans uniform with Miami Dolphin colored socks (or vice versa, I forget as it's been awhile), but they only sold for $200-$300; nothing like the Ruth!

There was 5 total made,3 went in random cases and 2 went in the Macfarlane Vault.

So there should be 2 lefted,I hope i read some day 1 was found at a retail store.

As fare as the walmart employee that offered you to buy them,Rest assure that person got fired.

Employees get discount cards and if they resale for profit automatic termenation on the spot and they also have to repay all the discount's they received while working for wally world.

I use to work for walmart and i seen a women get fired for holding a tickle me elmo toy when they where hot.Walmart is 1 of the few retail chains i know that care. You can't purchase anything while working and you have to be on your break. No holding or hiding items is aloud.

Why asked a wally world employee,I just flat out open the cases even if there standing right next to me.What are they going do call there super,9 out of 10 times as long as you don't make a mess they don't realy care.

This was very hard to read. You should definitely get a dictionary...j/k.

Why did McFarlane keep 2 of them in the vault??

A shop I used to go to before they closed would get the rare sp'ed figures directly from a manager at toys r us. Kinda stinks.

Todd McFarlane I believe has a copy of every version of every McFarlane made. Not sure why they held 2 back. I wouldn't be surprised if one was used in some type of promotion contest down the line.

I believe you but I also think all stores are different. Its a very good possibility that the guy offering to sell things to me was never fired or anything. And I can totally see them pulling this crap during the holiday season when certain toys become the #1 item kids want.I mean...who can really stop them from doing it?Not walmart. All they have to do is know when the stuff is shipped and then go over there and buy them all. Then when they are working if they see people looking for them or overhear them asking for one...all they have to do is give them a phone number and tell the person to call them.I'm not sure wally world could do much to them.I am also sure enough people would be desperate enough to where they wouldn't care as long as they could get their kid what they wanted.

Its one of the main reasons I hated layaway.People could go in and take an entire case of the new stuff off of the shelves and put it in layaway. This happened several times with the Marvel Legends.I'd go to walmart one random day and see a bunch of figures that were way too old to be on the shelves. Not all of them were even variants and I would ask the lady who worked in toys(I got to know here pretty goo just from bugging her about when they were getting new stuff in) and she would tell me she put them out because they had previously been in layaway and nobody ended up paying them off.I finally figured out through a few of the other dealers that there was a coupe of guys that set up out at Traders village that would do this so that when a new series hit shelves they could basically corner the market and keep them out of collectors hands. That way you'd go to the 3 or 4 different walmarts around the northwest side of town and not find a darn thing. Then you'd go to traders and find them all out there and if you didn't buy them there or a comic shop you were SOL.They did the same thing with the treasure hunts and the star wars figures but they would sell some of those instead of just taking them off the shelves.

But like clock work they would snap up the two cases that came in and leave one in layaway and never come back to get it.About the only thing you can do is like I said...just find you a walmart or target off the beaten path and look for them there. It worked out very well for me because there were plenty of times I was driving 60 miles or more one way to work so I had plenty of places I could stop and check.
