His life got up ended/destroyed for sure. But, I think I agree your assessment. Very nice gesture, but it still seems odd to me. Even the timing is odd. Why right now?

Timing could be because everyone was focused on the deadline today and Bartman is still not comfortable in public. 14 years later!
Good for the Cubs. Bartman is not an athlete but there's some parallels to Buckner finally feeling ok to come back to Fenway. Neither deserved the crap they've endured but Bartman.....man how ridiculous one moment can change your entire life

I had an odd view of this whole fiasco.
As many know I worked for the Cubs for a number of years and trained many of the security people that were assigned to keep Steve Bartman safe. It was odd to see these guys I knew on television that night trying to hustle this innocent fan out of the ball park and into safety. Let me just tell you, I know firsthand from those who were there and Bartman took incredible amounts of hell that night as everything from beer, pop and any number of concession items were thrown at him as he was escorted to the security office. Nobody...and I mean nobody should have to go through what he went through.
Now for the odd part of this story.....I worked with Steve Bartman at the time when this happened. On the day after the game we had news crews circling our building and hunting him...yes...hunting him. Steve had to leave town for awhile until everything calmed down and to this day I am not quite sure where he is living as he has broken off most communication with everyone but close friends and family. I left that company we both worked for three years ago and even then, we would see a writer or two on occasion camping out in the parking lot looking for an exclusive. What they never knew was that Bartman worked from home after this fiasco so he rarely, if ever needed to come to work in the building. What I saw from two different perspectives was a guy that was spat upon and had garbage thrown on him as well as having his whole life turned upside down just because he wanted to catch a ball that was actually in the stands anyway. Steve has been a stand up guy and refused anything that was offered him in terms monetary reward and even gave away to charities the money that was raised for him and the trips he was promised. All the guy wanted to do was see the Cubs win as he was a huge Cubs fan at the time....just like the rest of Cub fandom.
Steve got screwed in more ways than one and a ring is not going to give him any measure of closure from this incident. I am quite sure he will turn down this offer from the Cubs as well, just like he has with all of the other offers they have sent his way. I think its awesome the cubs have reached out to him but it is not the Cubs who need to ask for forgiveness, its the fans who treated him like crap and even threatened his life.

Steve just sent a press release thanking the Cubs and stated how he and his family will treasure the ring. Good for Him. I am glad he is at least accepting something for the hell he was put through.

Yes, he deserves it and so much more. I grew up a White Sox/Brewers fan and all my years growing up on the far north side (Gurnee, IL) taught me there aren't many classy Cubs fans. But Steve Bartman was one of the classy ones, from everything I've heard, read, and seen. And I bet you, despite all the BS he dealt with in the wake of the Cubs' self-inflicted collapse, he would give that ring back if it meant he could go back and not reach for that ball.

Bad things happen to people every day... much worse than being the scapeGOAT for a team's slump continuing. It sucks. People threw drinks on him. I get it.
But hiding for 14 years? Come on.
But hiding for 14 years? Come on.
He had to, there as a regular stream of unwanted phone calls, emails and death threats, wasn't until they won, they started leaving him alone.

I am happy the Cubs made this very classy gesture, and I really like Bartman's eloquent statement. This is why baseball is so great. We see the best and worst in people through this game, and it's shown so much more good than bad that the bad stands out in such stark clarity.

Also don't forget Dusty Baker leaving Prior in waaaay too long after we were up big in his previous start in what, game 2 or 3? Can't remember which exactly, just remember he threw well over 100 pitches and we were up big.

yup and with the long delay like you said Baker should have yanked him. Thus is the well deserved knock against him as a manager, can't handle a pitching staff. Remember 2002...hmmm?
