I am and will be rooting for the Mariners this year. I tell you what they match up pretty
well and have a pretty good team. I hope they can stay healthy get on a hot streak around
September and carry it right through to a World Series win then Griffey can go out a winner :D

Has anybody got a scouting report on Nick Franklin? His numbers look decent, but what does he look like in person? Just wondering.

Looks like they corrected the typos since my first post - the new winner of "Best OF Arm" is now James Jones and Michael Pineda wins "Best Fastball".

I had high hopes, like a lot of people, for Dan Cortes a couple years back.

Still have anything? I hear he's all talent and a total head-case.

My biggest issue is Noriega not being in the top 10, but Franklin is. I like Franklin and he should be in the top 10, but I don't see how he's ahead of Noriega. Also, I have almost no trust in Halman, so I'd probably drop him, add James Jones maybe.

I wonder where Raben will end up by the end of the year. He should be healthy for ST and should be able to get his first full year of pro ball in

Jake (Portland, OR): Any reason to be optimistic for Gabriel Noriega? Top 30 material?

Matthew Eddy: Noriega, a 19-year-old Venezuelan shortstop, has defensive tools alone that will carry him to Double-A or higher. We've written before that he has an innate ability to slow the game down, which is rare for such a young player. Noriega hit .311/.360/.456 this year for Pulaski, but that's a bit deceiving because the Appalachian League is generally friendly to hitters and because he struck out a lot to get to that line. With below-average speed and power potential it's hard to envision Noriega developing into a star. But keep in mind that a scout told me similar things about Yunel Escobar in 2007. It will be interesting to see how the Mariners resolve the shortstop situation at Clinton next year, with both Noriega and '09 first-rounder Nick Franklin candidates for everyday play there.

It's hard to envision anybody in the system outside of Ackley and Saunders becoming stars.
