Not at all. Even ignoring all the past "exclusives" that UD has had, everyone in the hockey world has been sick to death of the word 'exclusive' since UD was granted exclusive rights close to three years ago.
For me, that sparked a huge drop in buying hockey cards.

I can't stand Upper Deck, but the lack of competition will kill baseball cards and if what topps has been
doing in the past 3 month to product is any indication, baseball will die a long hard death if this
deal goes through. Was anyone besides beckett complaining back in 2004 when we had 3 main
card companies all pushing for our business? Remember when a 100 dollar box of cards could
get you 4-5 autographs and guys like Mays and Aaron signed?

Anyone seen the 1:305 odds for autographs in the new topps heritage? The checklist contains
95% commons and 5% semi stars. Is this the future of a topps only hobby?

no thanks

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love the checklist from 2009 Topps Heritage autographs. They still have major stars in the set with the 2009 Topps Heritage Clubhouse Collection Relics Autographs but for some of the guys they put in this is the only certified auto they currently (or probably ever will) have.

Need clarification - does this mean Topps wants to be the sole producer of LICENSED baseball cards, or baseball cards as a whole?

They would potentially have the only MLB license.

Oh. No big deal then, from a prospector's standpoint.

Isn't it interesting how "EXCLUSIVE" is the new buzz word around the entire card community ever since Razor reintroduced it last year?

But for the industry it's huge, and that would hit prospecting as well. As there are less companies there could be less collectors. Speaking for myself, if there were just Topps cards for my players I would have a lot less in my collection. So to me this could be a huge deal. Also for prospectors, if UD keeps losing licenses, will they stay around? USA would be gone if they are, at least in the form it is, and that would be a hit to prospectors.

2009 USA is essentially "gone" anyway, do to the unnecessary tripling of the SRP

On his appearance Steven Judd did take the blame for the USA increase. I think you can almost guarentee if the set is still around it will be back to what it originally was.

Sure this is nice, but adding in guys who batted lifetime .210 to a product that has 1:305 packs as its autograph
odds is not what 99.9% of collectors are looking for. In the past topps has been able to put in these "first
timers" but also put in guys like Mays, Aaron and Duke Snider. The 08 Update list is 100 times stronger and
pulles like 1:120 packs.

It took me a while to figure out you wrote anything  I moved it for you.

I disagree that *collectors* need more Mays, Aaron, and Duke Snider. You can pick up all of these from innumerable previous releases and can be had on eBay for less than the cost of a box. There are a ton (repeat TON) of big name autographs in this set but they went towards what collectors want by releases a lot of guys that have no previous certified autographs.

This happened for me, too. And by "drop-off" I mean "nothing since 2006 other than one box of SP Authentic". I love ITG, but I just can't get into their stuff right now.

If this happens, I'll never buy wax again.

If this happens, the MLBPA may be the dumbest organization on the face of the planet.

This will damn near take me out of the hobby. I really hope this does not happen.

Don't worry Joe, there will probably just be a couple years of drought for you. When Donruss went away there were a couple terrible years of no new Rickey Henderson cards, but Topps eventually signed him. I assum Jr. will want to get paid by somebody, even if it is miserable old Topps.

i dont think its dumb its mlbpa and mlb controlling their product. look at it like a musician they only put out albums on one label until their contract is up then they move on or resign. from a business standpoint its a strong idea and keeps from saturation and from my collecting standpoint i love it. no matter who would get the contract i see it as good.

Let's not forget one of the MLBPA's more infamous slogans, found plastered within advertisements in sportscard magazines not too long ago:

"You're not a rookie unless we say you are".

Unadulterated hubris at its finest.

But technically the MLBPA is right here, aren't they? I mean, who else could say otherwise - either you're in the major league player's association or you're not.

It will hurt because the less companies out there then thats less money being made. Its not very strategic from a business standpoint unless they know something we do not which I find it hard to believe there is in fact a good reason.

But you always have to have rivals.Like the Bloods and Crips. What kind of existence is it if there is no yin to the yang?No rivalry?

All I can say is at least its topps. :|

LOL I don't disagree with anything but I have to award you +100 internets for comparing Topps and UD to the Bloods and Crips.

i am sure they will offset any losses in revenue in the exclusive contract. i understand the value of competition and agree that it plays a great part in regulating some of the things produced and keeping quality and pricing in line. however this will streamline the mlb brand and i dont see that as being bad...

what if panini would win it?

I personally think it would suck. It would be like saying, Fox shows would be airing on DirecTv. Sure, everyone could get DirecTv, but why would one company want to make all of their fans only have one choice?

After DLP was pushed out after 2005, take a look at the quality of products in 2006, for me personally, it was one of the first years, I actually questioned why I collect cards.
