Ask a hundred Americans to name 5 baseball players before 1980 and I bet all 100 say mantle

Terry Terry Terry, did you miss my ~sarcasm marks~ ;-)

Of all of the FCB posters, I thought you would catch that one, haha

I dont blame you however if you didnt read all 59 posts before yours to see why I did what I did

Yea, for sure.

Lets just get something straight about Jeter too... Jeter is a well known name just in general, not necessarily baseball. I mean sh!t, my wife probably can't name 10 baseball players but she sure as hell probably knows Jeters name. That doesn't mean he is going to be up on the Mount Rushmore. I would probably agree that he might not make the Yankee all-time Mount Rushmore!

Agree with this. It was almost exactly what I was saying but Musial collector has his head up his @ss.

The argument was about name recognition when jeter was brought up. I would GUARANTEE that jeter has more name recognition in the US than Williams. Did I ever say he was a better player? No. I even said neither deserved to be there. Of course jeter doesn't belong on any Mount Rushmore IMO, including the Yankees.

Clearly Ted Williams touches a soft spot for some people.

Clemente is one I spaced on. I think I would put him four for what he did for the game of baseball and other players.

Jeter is a more well known name to whom, 15 yrs olds and chics?

Williams IS a HOFer, a war vet and one of the greatest players of ALL time.

Jeter is a Yankee and gives you an auto if you **** him, thats what he has going for him.

However, to stroke your tiny ego, I will say youre right, this Ted Williams guy is a nobody

You are one of the most dense people I've interacted with on this board my god.

Learn to read the entire post. You can't argue that Williams has bigger name recognition than Jeter. That's just not true. Jeter is one of the most well known athletes in the US and I can guarantee if you polled thousands or millions of Americans more would know jeter. THATS ALL THE POST WAS ABOUT JETER WAS TALKING ABOUT. Don't get so butt hurt over your boy Williams not making it. He shouldn't be there. Period.

And if that's what you think about jeter you just have been living under a rock your entire life.

Williams is a war vet? Okay awesome. Doesn't add much to his Mount Rushmore resume.

There's no way he's over Robinson, Ruth, or Young and Clemente and Nolan both deserve to be higher than him as well as Mantle.

Calm down bud. And learn to read the entire posts before spewing out your @ss

Nobody is saying Williams isn't a great player, and nobody is saying that jeter is better than Williams because that's not true.

He has bigger name recognition though and that's not debatable.

Actually I think the Vet reference makes sense. If he didnt have to leave to serve his country his numbers would be even greater. I think Ted Williams deserves fair consideration based on his entire career.

As far as Jeter, he does not belong there. Not saying he isnt great or popular, but a lot of his status has to do with the team he is on. He is a first ballot HOFer for sure, but i dont believe he would even be top 10-20 for most. I'd vote for legends mentioned earlier or even Pete Rose, Cal Ripken, Rickey Henderson, before Jeter, but I'm sure this wont be popular.

Honestly, I'm sure a dozen or more Yankee greats would have something to say about Jeter even making the Yankee All-time Mount Rushmore... just saying...

Dense? Youre the dumsass that said Williams was just as laughable as Jeter. Youre the one that put them in the same sentence together!!

Clearly you cannot read my user name, I have ZERO to do with Ted Williams, he is NOT "my boy". You're the dense one if you cannot fathom that Williams is a top 4 player of all time.

And if that's what you think about jeter you just have been living under a rock your entire life.

Heres youre chance to shine Maxe, enlighten me on Jeter. Learn me something. Teach me the facts of Jeter!!!

Williams is a war vet? Okay awesome. Doesn't add much to his Mount Rushmore resume.

Might not add to his importance as a baseball player, but as a human, a **** ton more than YOUR BOY Jeter! Add in three more years of baseball that was taken away and he'd be one step behind Ruth

There's no way he's over Robinson, Ruth, or Young and Clemente and Nolan both deserve to be higher than him as well as Mantle.

If Robinson is not African American and Clemente is not Latin American, neither would be in this discussion. As a player alone, Williams beats both. Both are mentioned, and deservedly so for their breakthroughs, and deserve consideration on anyone's Mount Rushmore of Baseball. As for Nolan Ryan over Ted Williams, dude, put down the beer you were getting your ass drunk off of the other night, along with whatever hallucinogens.

Calm down bud. And learn to read the entire posts before spewing out your @ss

Quote me on one thing that spewed out of my ass that wasnt fact.

Ok I am in waiting room at my wife's dr , bored , so I went through the last few Rushmore debates...

Here are the results based on the info from those who posted 4 players in their post.

Ruth - posted 19 times
Ted - posted 10 times
Aaron - posted 8 times
Cy and Mays - posted 6 times each
Ty and Jackie - posted 5 times each
Walter - posted 4 times
DiMaggio and Mantle - 3 times each
Hornsby , Nolan and Clemente - 2 times

That's where the 13 multi listed stand.

Those with one vote - Gehrig , Stan , Gibson, Ozzie, Wagner, Mack, Paige, J Gibson, Charleston, Dihigo, Mathewson, Griffey, Pujols, Rickey, Campanella, Cano, Cabrera, and the Major League movie cast ;)

Maybe we can use the 13 multi listed guys and do a poll / vote / thread where you have to choose from those "finalists" only and people vote from that?

I'm not the biggest Yankee fan in the world but let's see here.. Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, DiMaggio, Yogi, Ford, Reggie, Maris, Rizzuto, Munson, Rivera. I'm sure I'm forgetting countless others but no way he even comes close.

Does name recognition and historical importance mean name recognition and historical importance to a baseball fan, or name recognition and historical importance to the average person?

Great Question.......
I think for a Baseball Mount Rushmore, it has to be name recognition AND historical importance to a baseball fan, NOT to an average person.

With that, Ill add in mine now.........

Ruth - This is my George Washington
Mays - This is my Thomas Jefferson
Robinson - This is my Abe Lincoln
Williams - This is my Teddy Roosevelt

Solid picks for sure. I'm probably going with... Ruth, Cy Young, Robinson and it's a toss-up for 4th spot and I could go with Williams for sure or maybe Aaron... I'm not a fan of Mays making it personally but probably not far from the list.

Cobb was voted greatest player ever while Ruth was still playing...he was that highly regarded.

Ruth needs no explanation.

Mays is the epitome of a ball player to me.

Griffey (Seattle) was the greatest player I've ever seen.
Cobb - Dead Ball
Ruth- Roaring 20's
Mays- Golden Age
Griffey- Modern

Mine would be...

Ruth , Jackie , Aaron , Cy

Including these votes here is the ones with 20% minimum votes off the posts in the last 2 Rushmore debates.

Ruth - 23 votes
Williams - 13 votes
Aaron and Mays - 8 each
Cy and Jackie - 7 each
Ty - 6 each

No others received 20%

I am going to piggy back on this and post another thread where I think the debate is even stronger on who belongs. (70s n up)
