I was watching a box busters video the other day and Chris Olds claimed on the video when he pulled a bat card he could tell from the chip if the bat was made from ash or maple.

What are the characteristics to look for? It seems most bat cards I pull seem to be the same wood color and feels about the same roughness. I don't know if a 3/4" chip can show enough grain to determine ash or maple, but maybe it's just because I don't know exactly what I am looking for.
