The best part of the Treasures line now is the box itself. The cards are just Donruss Classic on steroids.

That's a pretty funny assessment - though sadly it also really seems true.

Those auto patch rookies are fantastic. Really nice cards, right on par with previous Exquisite releases. Love the huge patches, and I'm glad to see that Panini saved its best for last here. But the rookie class concerns me. If you don't pull one of the big four, you're looking at a $100 or less card in my opinion. I can't see a Demar DeRozan or a James Harden hitting $100 a month after this is released.

The "Classics on Steroids" comment couldn't be more true. This product can't have enough nice cards in it to hold its box price, right? Where is the creativity? Those jerseys are insulting for a product of this caliber and won't sell for more than $4. Exquisite would at least number those jerseys low and integrate them with the card design. These treasures jerseys look like cheap Fleer jerseys from the mid-2000s. Those double jersey/triple jersey autos aren't amazing. Those base cards don't look as nice as Exquisite (or even Ultimate Collection or UD Black or, I would argue, Contenders in certain respects). That Kobe auto was probably worth the price of the box, depending on the nickname he chooses to put on the card. I suspect "Black Mamba" would sell extremely well. Then again, that card would have to bring $400 at auction. That's a tall task right now. Only two Kobe Panini autos have sold for over $400 in the last two weeks. Both were BGS 9.5, and one auction clearly looks like somebody just way overpaid. I wouldn't have offered more than $250 for the Contenders that sold. It was /50 and had nothing distinguishing about it.

The bottom line for Panini this year is that without LeBron, Durant, Wade, Jordan, Derrick Rose, Dwight Howard, Roy, CP3, and other star autos, there's not nearly enough to drive these products. Their basketball success in the future hinges on their ability to unlock these players from their UD and Topps contracts. Kobe, Dirk, Carmelo, Pippen, Bird, Magic, and Nash and the rookie classes going forward won't be enough. They need these other young stars badly. They need $1000+ cards to push this product. Right now, Panini can't make a $1000 card, other than perhaps a dual logoman.
