Beckett says "not able to authenticate"??????

So last year I bought (with a guarantee from seller) a DeLongi Gehrig card that books at like $5000. I paid I think $300 and got it from a guy who said it was in his fathers "box of cards" and that if it wan't real that he would refund.....which he did.

My aggrevation comes in that Beckett (after I spent $100 rushing this thing through) sends it back as "not able to authenticate". Not fake, not real, not graded - but we don't know!?!?!?!

FOR $100??? Your the "Experts" and you "don't know". That is BS!

So I guess it was worth the risk - but Beckett has me ($U&# (unhappy!)

What are all your thoughts?

Sounds like you bought a fake for 300.00. sorry but it sounds like you got hosed by the old "I found it in my grandpas old box" trick

"Unable to authenticate" is CYA talk for "it's fake."

Looking at that scan, the coloring doesn't look right.

Do you have a scan of it that you made with it in hand?

Either way, if you're sending vintage to Beckett to grade you are doing yourself a disservice.

Beckett knew it was a reprint, its the wording of their rejection that is confusing. PSA has the same problem, they also word it like they are unsure ie "?AUTHTCY"

The easiest part of authenticating an item is tell a fake from an authentic card. trust me there are no good R333 reprints or counterfeits when seen in person.

The R333 Gehrig card the OP pictured above is a common reprint. There are design changes (cropping), it takes less than a second to tell if you know where to look exactly.

First obvious thing that jumps out at first glance is the combined width of the white borders is too wide. Also the whole image has been cropped, on the Gehrig the best place to look for evidence of cropping is the cloud on the right side where it meets the border..... youll see the reprint the cloud is slightly closer to the edge.

Here is an authentic card to compare it too.

Sorry, Best to research the characteristics of the sets and the fakes that go with it before going for big $$ card.

Thanks for the thoughts - I still think they should just say "its a fake!" Weird that they want to be the experts and say "can't tell".

And I didn't fall for the "found it in dads box" trick. Read the post slick - HE PROMISED A REFUND AND HE REFUNDED. I was just out the cost of the grading - which I think Beckett should have given back to me - crooks! "can't authenticate".

Perhaps you should ask them to sell it for you. I have no doubt that they would dub it authentic and give it a gem mint grade.

Not to sound so crass but you need to learn the lingo of grading companies. There is a sense of liability if they come right out and say its fake or a reprint. Questionable authenticity covers the entire gambit. Chalk it up to a learning experience in TPG lingo.

BVG are very good graders. They are toe to toe with SGC for vintage, imo. One reason I think the grading companies don't come out and say "fake" is the liability. If they say they just can't authenticate it, it might be better for them from a legal standpoint. It is confusing....(I just noticed that yankeeno7 said the same thing)...I hadn't even seen that post when I typed my response

Well it wouldn't have cost $100 if you didnt need a "rush" grading. And Im sure you insured it, yada yada. Atleast you got your $300 back, with-out dispute!!
