I'm in the same boat with my player, Paul O'neill. First of all, yes that is who I collect but how much product are you going to produce of him. He has been in every Topps product now in the last 5 years. He has been retired since 2001. It seems like there is more Topps cards of him in the last 5 years than his 17 years of playing and yes everything I have seen in this '14 Tribute is recycled pictures. Topps your losing me here.

There has to be hundreds of thousands of professional photos taken of Griffey over his career.
Using the same photo even twice is inexcusable.

That is the reason I no longer care for the Will Clark cards that are released. I may get into them if the images were something new , but it's just laziness and I want no part.

I am curious if Topps saw all the Griffey items , including parallels, just laid out over a table what the justification would be. It couldn't be a reason that benefits the consumer.

Yes but if topps kept using different photos, they'd have to pay for the rights to each and every one. They are doing nothing more than is done with parallels in every set. With parallels, the picture is the same. The card just looks different. With this, the product is different but the picture is the same. Yes it would get old for sure but topps probably thinks paying more and more money for more pictures gets old.

I will say it does not explain why they don't just use older pictures they do own. They wouldn't have to pay more money and they could probably change it enough to where you wouldn't see the same one used but every five or six years.

I could understand obviously the parallels but there are some pretty high end cards in that list all using the same photo.
Hell even upper deck used a different photo from their season opener product to base set every year. Same at bat but a hair before or after said picture making it different

Here is the 2014 Tribute

Here is a group out of my PC over the last couple of years. This is not including all the parallels to the same brand. I found at least 3 more after I took the picture.

Did Topps at one time employ their own photographers? Or maybe just on photo day and then purchased the rest? Just curious I guess. This would get old I agree

Wow.. Exactly what I'm talking about. Freakin ridiculous. And they expect us to keep buying this garbage.
I personally like gypsy, ginter and tribute product but I won't buy anymore singles. they are effecting the secondary market by doing so.. Plenty of people will still buy don't get me wrong but how many people feel the same way now

I'd deal with it if the guy was retired and it was only done one year, with each year having a different picture. But like most of you, I'd prefer different pictures. I'm just not sure what the exact process is they are dealing with when it comes to pictures.

Looking at the other two cards O'neill has for this product and its the same thing. Recycled pics. I could do the same example with the other two if I had too. I gave up on the new stuff for the most part. Any new stuff for the most part is first or uniform serial numbered stuff. If I can just shake that addiction I can put all this new stuff to bed.

At least you get new cards from Topps. Why is a guy like Paul O'Neill in every new set, but a very similar caliber & era player - Mark Grace - hasn't been in any Topps product since 2005? I think Topps player selection of retired players is even more recycled than their photos.

This.

We need a good retired former Astros pitcher. Nolan Ryan! Wait, we need a less popular one too. Mike Scott! There were no other good pitchers, right? Right.

I was kind of getting to the same point in post #5 . After like only two cards combined in '08 & '09 for O'neill the flood gates opened after that year after year. Your recycled player comment made me laugh. Spot on though. Careful what you wish for you will have Grace up to your knees with all their products.

There really is no excuse.
Back in the mid-late '80s, players like Mattingly, Boggs and Gooden would be in 20+ different Topps and Fleer sets, when you included base Topps, the several annual small boxed sets, minis, stickers, tattoos, embossed, 3D, food issues, etc.

Yet, the companies always used different photos for their sets.
Even the Fleer mini sets from '86-'88, that had the same design as the regular base set, used different photos.

It's just pathetic how Topps is either too lazy, or doesn't want to spend the money, for new photos.

And most hardcore player collectors put up with it for some reason because they feel they have to have every card of their player.
