I was speaking to a friend about prospecting and he wants to jump right into it on the deep end (buying a case).

I have not been following case prices so I have no clue what's a good deal at current prices...he's only looking for bowman products...so the choices are...

2007 Bowman Draft
2008 Bowman Regular or Jumbo
2008 Bowman Draft
2009 Bowman Regular
2009 Bowman Jumbo

Also, where can I get the best prices on cases other than ebay or blowout?

Thanks!

07 Draft is the cheapest its been in a while. Cases at auction on ebay have ended as low as under $500 dlvd in the past few weeks.

Thanks for the input. My only hesitation with 07BDP are the crazy SOTF autos that count as "the" auto on the box....also the auto lineup is less than stellar...any other opinions?

SOTF are in 06. Don't believe there are any in 07. Auto lineup isn't great in 07, but the base set is the best available.

Autos aren't great at all. Every important super of note has been pulled. There are no SOTF though - that's '05 and '06. Biggest drawback is that the great base set is hurt by the autos that came in '08 Bowman of the same players.

Oh, my bad on the SOTF's. Since it's his first intro into prospecting...I'm leaning towards 08BDP...but where can I get the best price on a case? Everywhere seems to be over $800.

I wouldn't touch 08 draft at anywhere near 800. You are going to get pretty much nothing from the base cards, and unless you hit a big parallel auto or a lot of the big auto guys, it won't be anywhere near break even. I would suggest 07 to a first time prospector because there are a lot of guys that have already made the bigs and its nice when you pull a card of a guy you have heard of and has already made the majors

I don't think I would buy a case for 800 either, but I disagree about the base cards. They may not be as hot as they were a couple weeks ago, but there are plenty of guys on the base checklist that can provide some nice value. Evan Longoria is a nice example, as his BASE rc logo cards were selling for $2+ per card at one time. And as with all base stuff, players will sell well as they perform well, reach the majors, etc. You are right that there may not be huge value from base stuff right away, but there are a lot of young players in the base set so there should be value for years to come.

There is some value in the 08 base cards, don't get me wrong. But you are guaranteed a decent amount just from the base in 07, a lot more than from 08. 08 basically comes down to whether or not you hit big autos. 07 you can still do very well even if u don't hit any big auto. But at $800 vs. $500-$550, its not even close imo

Yep, completely agree. Much easier to get value out of base stuff from 07 BDP than to gamble on hitting the better autos from 08, plus the 250-300 dollars you save by going with 07 makes it the easy choice...although 08 is more fun of a break in my opinion.

If your friend wants to be a prospector steer him clear of case breaks and teach him the value in buying singles.

I think i had more fun ripping 07, only because you pull a decent chrome every few packs. When i ripped 08 it was basically wait for the auto and hope to pull another decent card per box, lol. If 09 draft isn't loaded i will probably go with 07 come December

Yes, that is my opinion too but he's more of a high thrill kinda guy and love watching case breaks on youtube. He will buy singles in the future, but just want a case break to "start off" his venture!

You might get the best deal on ebay if you sign up for all the little bonuses that are available at the moment, like Live.com (which I guess is bing.com now with the most annoying commercial of the year) and BigCrumbs. There are threads about these deals on the boards. There's a 2007 Bowman Draft case on ebay right now for $589.99 with free shipping. Live.com's discount is currently 8%, so the effective price is $542.79. I think BigCrumbs gives you 36% of the Final Value fee, which for a $590 item comes to around $39, so that's another $14.04, though you have to wait a month or two to get it. Your net price for that case would be $528.75 delivered.

That's with my limited knowledge. Some others on the boards really work these discount/rebate programs. It's in my head that there's another deal worth another 2% off the live discount, but can't recall right now. It might've been a limited time deal. Also, use Internet Explorer to search for a Microsoft item that's sold on ebay, like Xbox. It seems to give better discounts once in a while that way, rather than using Firefox or Chrome.
