I just purchased a Jason Heyward 2008 Bowman Chrome Blue Refractor and would like to get it graded. Which service is the best to use, PSA or BGS?

BGS for anything in the last decade & 1/2

PSA for all older cards.

That's how things trend.

this is a pretty good basic guideline of how the market works if you are grading to sell now or in the future. If you are just a collector and looking to protect your cards, they are all good for that but in the end you have to decide which one you find the most aesthetically pleasing for yourself.

Probably a safe bet it was graded already and likely not a gem. Just a heads up.

I don't even get caught up anymore in the "which is best" because each has their ups and their downs. I don't grade to sell and haven't graded anything in about 6 years now. I will purchase graded however and prefer SGC simply because I trust them and I like the looks of their holders.

I never had any problems with them. I like the service, holder, consistency, and customer service. BGS tend to always screw up my orders. It never fails.

BGs tends to be a tad stricter than PSA so if you are unsure if it would get a BGS 9.5, it is worth considering PSA. Another thing to consider, because pretty much everyone uses BGS to grade the newer stuff, there's very little nice PSA graded stuff from the last few years, and there's a decent number of PSA fans out there who only buy PSA. The result is that at times the PSA graded card will sell for more than the BGS one in the same grade.

KSA is garbage. I've crossed 7 vintage hockey cards from KSA to PSA...4 came back as trimmed. Two others came back a grade or two lower

I know that most people are just going to post about the companies they have a bias to. I will mention that I picked up a 2005 Bowman Chrome Justin Verlander SCG 98 (equivalent of a BGS 9.5 or PSA 10) for $80 recently. Just a few days earlier a BGS 9.5 sold for around $150. SCG is a respected company and very popular for pre-war stuff, but on the modern stuff I think this sale is telling. (The card is at BGS now so in a few days I'll know if it crossed to a 9.5.)

On modern, I agree, BGS is more strict...but pre-1980, I totally disagree. From 1980 to 1990 I consider both companies hit or miss.

I think this just goes to show what people know the companies for. When SGC came out, pretty much from the get go it was made known that they specialize in vintage. I think it was kind of similar for BGS though not totally clear on that. In the end, I think that for the most part, they will each grade within .5-1 of each other and we all know that could depend on varying things.

You may be right. I should have limited my statement to newer cards as that is what I am familiar with. To be fair, my comment was directed at the card in question...
