Jays_Cards said:Joe Mauer is easily the best hitter in the AL. Being a great power hitter does not make someone a great hitter. See Ryan Howard. While Miggy is definitely in the top 5, he is not close to the all around hitter Mauer is. Some of the names on this list really arent even close. Vlad is not top 20.

Not sure how slapping singles and hitting under 10 HR a year makes Mauer better. If Miggy gets back to hitting .320+, which is fully doable considering he has hit better than that three times in his career, I think he's easily the best hitter in the AL. Mauer is an amazing all-around player when factoring in his defense, rapport with pitchers, intangibles, and his offensive ability for a catcher, but in terms of hitting, he's no better than Derek Jeter was in his prime (in fact, he's probably not even as good across the board, though given the lineup advantages Jeter had in his prime, it could be viewed as fairly equal). That's absolutely fine, and makes him a great player, but it certainly does not make him the best hitter in the league. The only thing Mauer has on Miguel is batting average, and even that gap (career-wise) is .317-.310 in Mauer's favor.
Bottom line, I can call the guy with the .925 OPS a better hitter than the one with an .856.
