Most sports card seasons when people ask me what is the most underrated product my answer is normally Topps Update. With this set The Topps Company has the time to let half a season of baseball unfold and create an accurate representation of the current year in baseball. It’s where you will often see the first card of a player in his new jersey, clever memorabilia and cards from the All Star Game.

Because it’s more of an under the radar thing, something rare happens with this product. You can actually buy it at the price point that Topps made it for. Normally when a product is good you have to shell out a lot more money than expected. No paying inflated rates even on jumbo on this. If you wait till some of the hype is over you might even be able to find some of this stuff discounted at your local card shop or online retailer. Make sure you have plenty of big thick top loaders if you decide to bust a case. Some of the insert sets here are really thick.

There are a few insert sets that are new in this release.

Gold Hall of Fame plaque
Gold Coin Futures
Gold Award Winners Rings
Gold Engraving Reprints
General Manager Autographs
Presidential Code Cards
The Mickey Mantle Sweepstakes

I’ve never cared for the trinkets they throw in these products, but at least they sell when you pull them. I would rather get an autograph of a player I follow than something that Topps had made for the product. Set collectors chase these manufactured pieces and that gives them some pretty good sale value for people busting. I don’t know of a single player collector that chases them.

The big winner in this set are clearly the Jumbo Patch cards you can get. The Mike Trout patch auto that is at the top of this article is stunning and a perfect example of a great looking card, even if it is with a sticker autograph. I will let the following photo gallery do the talking as far as the rest of the patches go.

This release would much more popular if they numbered it into the regular set.

The thing about Topps Update if you're busting, is that the jumbo patches and other cool relics are VERY tough pulls. At $600 for a case of Jumbo, 9 out of 10 cases will have the requisite manufactured patch/relic and 2 no-name autos per box, making most breaks pretty rough. You might pull a gem once in a while, but in general I find the product lacking and rather bland. If prices go down to the $350/case range like it did in 2010 (high production due to Strasburg-mania), then it becomes a much better break, since you can break even if you get only decent players without big hits and sell everything. At $600 though, I wouldn't touch it.

When busting Topps Update, you have to do it early and sell all the sets the first week. If you do that, you can do pretty well with it.

Yes, VERY tough pulls.

Anything worth having is a tough pull.

If you are busting at the case level, there are enough supplemental items for you to sell off to blunt the cost. IMO, it's worth the shot.

Personally, I liked it better when they had the chrome boxtoppers (although I was disappointed at the off-center/bad-condition 2010 chromes). The 2006 Kemp, 2007 Lincecum/Upton, and 2008 Kershaw/Longoria are some of my favorite cards I own. Would have loved to get a 2011 Update chrome Trout. I do agree the All-Star jumbo patches look great again this year.
