With pitch counts being all the rage in today's game, I was looking up complete games with low numbers of pitches and discovered an insane stretch by freakazoid control pitcher Bob Tewksbury in 1990: http://www.baseball-reference.com/playe ... g_gamelogs
8/12 - 9 inning shutout, 6 hits, 0 walks, 91 pitches
8/17 - 9 inning shutout, 1 hit, 0 walks, 79 pitches
8/22 - 7 innings (took the loss), 8 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, 82 pitches
8/29 - 9 inning CG, 6 hits, one run (a HR), 0 walks, 73 pitches
Totals over that stretch:
3-1, 34 IP, 3 CG (2 shutouts), 21 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, 325 pitches, 0.65 WHIP
That comes to 9.5 pitches per inning, or 86 pitches per 9 innings.
If you remove the loss, he had 3 complete games in just 243 pitches (9 per inning, 81 per game). Since 2000, there have only been 44 games where a pitcher had a 9 inning CG and threw 91 pitches or fewer: http://www.baseball-reference.com/play- ... areit/t9k6
Tewks did it three times in 17 days. I wonder if he even had to ice his arm that month.
